I use a very nice Hitec Focus 4 72 mhz FM system and I need to find a new channel 20 transmitter crystal. I checked Tower (my usual goto place) and no dice. Any suggestions?[

Transmitter (FM, 72 mhz) crystals are not sold since the FCC states the end user is not supposed to be able to change this. The transmitters are tuned to the specific crystal that is installed into them so you would need to send the radio to service in order to have a crystal put in and tuned. On the older radios like this it is even more critical that the radio be tuned once the crystal is installed.

OK. So what about the newer radios that have computerized frequency changes at the touch of a button? Forget it I might as well throw it away and buy a new one. Gotta love planned obsolecence.

Different circuitry. Those radios would be the same as the current radios that use a plug in frequency module. All the tuning is held with in the module which is why you can change the whole module on those radios (not a crystal).

Sorry for my reaction, I am a disabled veteran and I am having trouble with my medication today, I don't know why.
I live on a fixed income and I am desperately trying to pursue my passion for aviation to share with my daughter and it is really frustrating. I have a new radio that I purchased about 10 years ago that works great but getting it to be compatible with other systems on a budget has proven problematic. I can not afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a new system . I already spent a pricely sum on my current system and to just throw it away will upset me greatly. I need to save every dollar I can.

Why do you need to change the Focus to channel 20 or are you just trying to replace a missing crystal?
Be aware the reciever crystals can be changed so it's best to change them to match a transmitter other than vice versa.
Mike.

My brand new Hitec Micro 05S receiver needs a single conversion crystal and so I went to my LHS and got a dual (because I didn't realize the Micro needed a single) . When I brought back the crystal for exchange ( somewhat iffy proposition given it is an electrical part) luckily it was unopened and he allowed me to exchange it for the only Hitec single conversion crystal he had. Unfortunately it is a channel 20 and my transmitter is a channel 24. I thought it would be a simple matter to install a # 20 transmitter crystal in my Focus 4 but apparently it is not. It doesn't matter because the plane it is going in hasn't been built yet. I just wish I had a more comprehensive understanding of the differences between all the different radio configurations since I do not have the money to buy a new radio every time I want to build a Slow Stick. I get info that Futaba and Hitec are compatible somehow and there are different shifts and Airtonics is like an entity unto itself and everybody in these parts will turn their nose up at you if you don't own a JR! Sorry , I am poor, but I would like to pass along my passion for aviation to my daughter so we have a hobby we can share. I can't even afford the $108.00 a year that it takes to join the local club. I can't do control line because the medication I have to take makes me dizzy in 2 turns. [&o]

Jeffie8696,
I just came across this thread. Perhaps, you have already found the answer to your problem; if you haven't, there is no need to buy a transmitter which has a channel 24 single conversion crystal. Why waste your money on buying a NEW transmitter which has a channel 24 single conversion crystal? All you have to do is to purchase a RECEIVER crystal (single conversion, channel # 24) and place the new crystal (Ch 24) in your present Hitec Micro 05S receiver. Placing a new crystal in your present receiver, no matter what 72mHz channel you need (i.e. channel #24), is legal and you can place the new crystal in the receiver yourself. However, it is ILLEGAL to change the crystal in your TRANSMITTER to a different channel number without sending it to a transmitter dealer and having it retuned. If you send you present transmitter to a dealer to change the crystal to a different channel number, you will have to pay him for the new crystal and also pay him for the retunning of your present transmitter.
To review: (1) It is illegal for you to replace a crystal in your TRANSMITTER. A dealer must do this.
(2) It is not illegal for YOU to change a crystal with a different channel number on your
RECEIVER.
Google "Hitec Micro 05S Receiver" and you will find several RC sites that sell crystals (select the crystal with the channel number that you desire). Try to buy a crystal brand that is recommened by the manufacturer of your receiver.
For example, I've just used google to search for "Hitex Micro 05S Receiver" and found several RC dealers that sell this receiver. One of them is BP Hobbies (BP Hobbies.com) and they also sell the crystals for this single conversion receiver. They have all channel numbers for this receiver. Their price for the crystal is $9.95. You can also google "Hitec"; usually any dealer that sells hitec products will also sell Hitec crystals for Hitec Receivers.
Search around the web in order to check for the best price for your Hitec 050S single conversion crystal.
Search and you will find.
Good luck,
Ernie

I wish my LHS had said something about it being illegal to change a transmitter crystal when he sold me the receiver crystal he knew wasn't right for mine. So much for the professional.

Here is an easy solution. Send me the single conversion crystal you just bought at your LHS and I'll exchange it for a channel 24 single conversion crystal. Be sure to put a note in there with it to remind me I'm doing this.
