hpi savage xl or traxxas t-maxx/revo 3.3

RE: hpi savage xl or traxxas t-maxx/revo 3.3
what do you want it for?
High speed turns? or just massive abuse?
I'd say savage for massive abuse
if you want something more for racing then Revo out of your choices. Personally I'd go 1/8th scale truggy over revo though.

You asked in a HPI SAVAGE forum about it, of course its going to be the Savage.
Besides, this question has been answered at least ten billion times... search for it and you'll dig up a lot of good information.

hey dont sweat it merv man. some people are old and cranky on here!..lol first off dont get the tmaxx. if you are abusing the truck the revo and the savage will both be great. the savage will have the upper hand as far as standing up to abusive driving. the revo comes out of the box with much better support, better tools, clearly marked out instructions. better radio gear. traxxas as a package is much better, but you buying a truck not the accesories right. so that said i would sway towards the savage but for you i have a particular reason. the savage x comes with a very user friendly engine. the trx 3.3 engines in the traxxas models do provide some decent top end power, but are not a very well suited monster truck engine, and can be tricky to get a tune for the new guys, the savage engine is much more forgiveing and has a braod spectrum for tuning. plus it produces beautiful bottom end power and sings a nice tune up top. when you grab you savage get a better servo for the steering, the hobby store should have a nice hitec unit in stock for around 30-40 dollars. remove the stock steering servo and replace it with the hitec one, then take your sf-2 servo and install it where the throttle brake servo is. this will cure the weak brake problem, oh and grab a hump back rechargable pack. (20-30 dollars). make sure you read the instructions front to back, take your time , and read everything , it will help as you are new to nitro. if you just fuel it up and go (as i imagine any 12 year old would want to) you will more than likely get lost in a tune and get frustrated or damage your engine- good luck and welcome to the hoddy!!-scott
oh and feel free to ask anything else get the savage x-not the xl...just my opinion

i let my 2 year old niece drive my nitro, I'm sure a 12 year old with prior RC expercince will do fine with it.
Just be aware that nitro cars do require a bit of mataince and up keep.
I think owning a nitro car at age 12 would be a good head start on learning car matiance and up keep, he's only 4 years away form being on the road in a real car guys.
let us know what car ya decide to go with!!

RE: hpi savage xl or traxxas t-maxx/revo 3.3
I switched from restoring real (classic) cars as a hobby to RC cars due to rc cars being cheaper and easier to maintain.
He said he had (lives on) 5 acres to drive it on, for all we know he lives on a farm and has been driving/repairing tractors since he was 5. Saying someone should avoid something they want and that can bring many hours of joy due to him being young is silly IMO.
This is a chance for y'all to help a young guy in the same hobby that interests you, instead of telling him what he cant do give him advice and tips on how to keep his nitro running instead of just blowing him off due to his age.
-Sorry for the hijack.-
On topic: I have dreams about bashing a savage so that's what gets my vote!!! Now either nitro or electric is yours merv, but do a little research online and make sure that the up keep and maintenance that a nitro requires is something that you think you'd enjoy, It can be a little frustrating at times but its is SO worth it when ya hear that little bugger screaming down the street!
Looking forward to seeing what ya get!

merv 1 other thing you mignt want to get is some decent loctite, on a savage there are threaded pins which hold the driveshafts together always make sure they are tight and loctited up otherwise they will fall out there is things you can do to stop them falling out such as putting a ziptie round them or a bit of heat shrink but then of courseyou dont know if they are wirking loose, but enjoy what ever you get

Personaly, I would stay away from the XL if you are new to nitro, as said before. Th XL comes with an engine with questionable durability. I've heard a lot more bad then good about the engine, problems with air leaks, bad carb, not tuning, etc.
The X comes with a very good beginer friendly engine, however.
That my 2 cents
Just curious, why do you like the XL over the X?

It won't last longer than the F4.6 in the X4.6 RTR.
The X4.6RTR has, arguably, one of the best RTR mills on the market, period.

Whoa guys. He said he is "new" to nitro and learning. You send him back to electric? He wants to step up a level. Then you send him to CEN???? OMG talk about problem prone, with lousy support and not user friendly! This may be a Savage site, but I have a CEN and an XL. Driven a REVO many times. For a beginner to nitro why not the XL? Yes there are some issues, but if you just want to bash and have a good time along with learning the hobby the XL is great. You can learn how they are built, there are many sites with parts and advice, and it's pretty rugged. As someone more experience hobbyists than I, told me a few years ago when I got my XL, don't be afraid of all the plastic. A lot of times plastic is more durable that metal. I've beat the crap out of my XL, did some cheap mods (thus you learn and improve at the same time), and it keeps running. I don't think it is particularly hard to tune either. So my vote is definitely the XL. Welcome and good luck.

i want the xl because we live on 5 acres on a farm
the x dosent have as much ground clearance as the xl

whatever i get it will be jumping, rolling, skidding and bashed
it will probably hit a few rocks, trees and stumps but i heard the savages can with stand that

XL's just longer.
could get the X, and order the XL TVP's, and drive shafts for under $50 and be ahead cash wise.
Main bonus the X has is more body options IMO
