Just did the shock mod...wow! what a difference
I just finished the shock mod using the fuel tubing and all I can say is WOW!!! What an incredible difference in the handling of the truck. I also went from the stock shock oil to 30W silicone. The suspension is a lot stiffer and thus handling on grass and pavement is like night and day. It handles so much better that I just trashed my servo saver on the steering...[:'(]. I imagine that will the suspension that stiff that the dirt handling will be pretty loose but I don't have any dirt around to check it out. I'm thinking that if I pull the preload spacers it will soften it up abit without lowering it much more if any.
Best $3.00 upgrade I have done for sure.

You won't need the spacers. They just make it stiffer and it won't lower it any more.

Cool...thanks for the tip.

I don't have my savage yet, but what mod are you talking about? Sorry for my ignorance.

You take the shock apart and put a small piece of fuel tubing on the shock shaft effectively making the shock shorter thus lowering the center of gravity on the truck. If you search there have been a few threads giving details on how to do it.

The shock mod, coupled with 30 wt shock oil, is a great combo. If you want the icing on the cake, try out some RC Boyz triple rate springs. They made as big a difference in the handling of my Savage as the shock mod did. Cheap too.

Best of all, it can always be reversed. I've done this on other RC's as well.

Great write up. I couldn't find a write up but I understood the concept and just tore into my shocks :-).
You need to get a camera with a better macro funciton...

RE: Just did the shock mod...wow! what a difference
Just did this mod last night on one of my savages so I could go car park bashing this morning.....WHAT A DIFFERENCE. I am still using a lighter weight oil in the shocks and this truck does't have the triple rate springs, unlike the other, so thats my next order and maybe some foam tyres if I can get some O/T from work.

Foamies with the shock mod are no joke! Since the ones I have are only 5" instead of 6" in dia. the wheel can turn lock to lock without binding the tire. Couple that with the drop job and I turn almost as fast as my touring car can! It really is a trip seeing the ol Sav scream into a turn and make it still on all four! I love it.

RE: Just did the shock mod...wow! what a difference
Great info here. I've got to do this. I just did one shock on each corner with 40wt oil last night and removed the spacers. Now I can spin it around on pavement instead of the barrel-rolling thing that it loved to do stock. I was getting tired of having to go flip it back over, I HAD to do something. The dirtbones are very grippy but the sidewalls and foams are way too soft, which adds to the problem, so I'll have to do this mod too. Thanks.

Here's a tip. Since the shock piston will not reach the bottom of the shock, to ensure it's full with oil do this. Insert the shaft into the body. Once you have the shaft low enough to plug the hole in the bottom, fill the shock from under the piston about halfway. This way you pull the piston and spacer into the oil thus getting any air from out of the bottom of the shock. Then just top it off and cap it. Now you have a modded shock with no pesky air in it.
