Default cant start on idle?

Hi,
I recently ran my savage in and im tuning it at the mo, very cold in the UK on a sunday morning though so i rarely even get it to proper running temperature so i cant tweak much until it gets warmer.
The question is, my savage will only start if i add a little throttle as i turn the rotostart to get it going, then i must take the plug starter and rotostart out pretty quickly and gas it so it doesnt stall. Why doesnt it start on idle?
My guess is the cold outside temperature, is that why?
Also even when i lean the HSN and the LSN in quite far, the engine STILL doesnt reach normal running temperatures, usually at 170-180F, but if left on idle for say 30 seconds, it usually drops to about 150F. Is this because of the very cold weather?
Please reply

on your tx, there is a adjustment for the throttle ok, now remove the airfilter on the savage. with your radio and truck on (not the engine) turn that adj knob you will see the carb open, mark it on your tx. the truck on startup, the carb will need to be open between 1/4 to 1/2 throttle because its cold, not because its cold outside because the engine is cold. after about 2 quarts it will settle down to about 1/4 throttle on startup. personally the manual says not to run in cold conditions (under 50deg), i know i read it somewhere.

No, it just means you cant tune them if they are too cold and also means you wont get very good performance.

first of all, it means feirenheit. You can run it in the cold weather and it wont hurt it! you will have to tune it everytime you switch back from cold to hotor warm weather!

yep, my savage wasnt running too great in the summer, i richened it and it ran much better. It was set lean because in the winter it helps get the temp hotter, and thus running better in cold weathers.

So you leaned your engine to get the temps up in winter, correct?

Well... DON'T You should be running the engine RICHER in cold weather, and LEANER in warm weather.

Cold air is more dense than warm air...therefore when it's cold there is more air getting into your engine. More air = leaner mixture. You have to richen the needles to increase the amount of fuel to get the balance correct. If you lean your engine when it is cold it will effectively be it running VERY LEAN, damaging it in the process.

Also, nitro engines run BETTER in cold weather than in warm weather, but only if you tune them to the conditions. If the air is more dense you are getting more air in the combustion chamber, increase the fuel by richening the mixture and you will then have more air AND more fuel when the mixture combusts. That means more BANG. More torque, more peak revs, more speed.

When it is cold you do need to get the engine up to operating temps so that the sleeve expands. Do this by reducing air folw over the cooling head (tape over body holes, wrap foil/sock etc over cooling head) and NOT by leaning the engine.

its simple its kinda like a car in the winter if you don start it up for awhile its kinda hard to start it. Like for an example I turn the car on around 15 20 mins before I leave to go somewhere in the winter! what I do to my savage when im in that situation is I start it up kinda the same way u did except for the taking off part and I just leave the glow plug igniter in for around 3 to 4 mins and rev it around for a little but until I see heat coming off of the engine.

Cold air INCREASES performance and necessitates richening. It's odd that you are not getting up to temp though, a difference of a few degrees C does not affect the running temp of a nitro engine much. I think you'll find you're running cool in hot weather too. Tune for performance after the engine has warmed up and as long as it's running fine under 300F, then why worry? Also, yes, it's normal to give a little gas to get a big block running, especially from cold. Don't worry, sounds like everythings fine.
