Default Trans or Diff?

I was bashing the other day when the back wheels stopped spinning. When I give it throttle, only the front wheels spin, but when I brake, only the back wheels lock up. I haven't been in this hobby very long, so I'm not sure what broke. I removed the skid plate in the rear, and the gears look O.K. to me, so I'm not real sure where to start. Any Ideas?

My guess is that you ripped down the truck for fun and reversed the diffs

Did you take it apart all the way down to the 4 spider gears or just where you could see the ring and pinion gears? You need to make sure you take it all the way apart if you have not.

All so make sure the setscrews are in you drive cups on your transmission and the rear differential. Being you said when you apply the brakes only the rear wheels stop I would check the setscrew in the cup you brake disc is on first

Cool! That's all it was, the set screw came out. Much more simple to fix than I originally thought. Thanks 46u

Glade to be of help and glade to see it was a simple fix. Make sure you put blue loctite on it.

By the way, I suggest you get a bag of those set screws (part #86094). Those tend to fall out often, even with blue loctite.
Now, if you upgrade your brakes to the HPI dual metal discs, the heat generated by the dual discs will cause the metal parts to expand and bond together. This will mean that the setscrew will have to be drilled out and the hoe for the hex dogbone cup would have to be retreaded (retapped). The only upside of this is you will not ever have to worry about 86094 falling out again.

I have a bag of them and with 3 to 5 gallons on mine so far never lost one but I am ready if I do. Matter of fact I have a pack of every type and size of screws, bolts, nuts, washers, set screws and so on for all my HPI vehicles.

That's a great thing to do. I do the same thing. I have a shoe box with Tic-Tac cases holding each screw I need to repair an R40 or a Savage. As a matter of fact, I am building another basher Savage from all of the spares sitting around!

Now that's way cool. Two bashers I have to play with.[8D]

I have 2 BIG field boxes that are really tackle boxes that has a compartment with plastic boxes with dividers that I keep mine in with the label off the packet so I can keep up with the HPI numbers. Right now as far as HPI not counting my others RC brands I have a Rush, MT 1 ¾, Savage and a Micro RS4. I all so have the original box my Savage 4.6SS kit came in FILLED with extra Savage parts not counting what I keep in my feild box. Right now I only have about 18 RC cars and trucks as I sold some.

Whoa, that's hard core RC! I've only been in RC for less than 2 years so I only have a hopped up R40 and 3 and 1/2 Savages (2 are shelf queens, one is my daily basher, and the half Savage is the one that I am building now from the spares).

Been a motorcycle mechanic and machinist for over 30 years but only in RC for about 6 years. I thought about building another Savage out of my spares but as sure as I do I will need the parts to keep the one I have going. I am in the process of getting everything I need to build a 1/8 buggy.

I've had the same thoughts about building the new Savage. But I decided to go with it anyway since replacement parts are really cheap for Savages.

I understand and if you read the whole thread you should and if you do not then any more explanation is not going to help!
