picco .28, half tank, pull start broke
I just got a picco .28 from tower hobbies. I set it all up and went out to start break in. I only got a half a tank through and the pull start cord broke. Does tower hobbies replace this? or do i HAVE to go through ofna?
Thanks-
Dan

I take it you did not preheat the engine. Picco engines are extremly tight and like most all new engines thay have to be preheated to loosen up the sleeve.

Never have i heard of pre-heating an engine. It broke when it was warm though. So, this is considered a user error? And i cant get it replaced?

You can try ofna usually has good service. Im sure if you explain what you did they may send a new one. You should preheat your engine, loosen the plug slightly to release compression. either one will work and sometimes you have to do both. What method of breakin are you using? Are you watching your temps at all. Its very very important to get the temps above 200 for break in otherwise it will not get broken in right. Also make sure your piston is set at bottom dead center after every tank.

can i tie the pull start for now? or no. If i am just going to buy a new one from tower. Or does the roto from my 25 fit?
Is the pull start for the .21 the same as the .28?

These two threads might be of some help. If I was you I'd stay away from pull start until you get that P3 broken in. Just my 2 cents. Yup it doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold. You'd prolly break the 2nd PS also. I went roto, damaged 1 roto bought a 2nd and finally got thru break in. What a sweet engine..no hype!

Where did it break? If it broke up near the pull you can retie it. Im not sure if the 21 and 28 are the same. I think they are. because teh blocks are the same size but im not sure about the one way bearings.

Yes, very serious. I replace all my pull start cords with mini blind cord before I ever pull them for the first time. Stuff lasts forever. Just take a ride around your neighborhood on a Sunday afternoon and you will probably find a half dozen mini blinds at the curb. If not most blinds come with way too much cord and you can easily cut some off without hampering the functionality of the blinds.

This is for the HPI pullstart, but the ofna should be fairly similar (sorry I haven't taken my ofna apart yet)

For your previous question, yes you can use the roto from your .25 HPI engine. You need to add something in the roto to fill in the gap between the one way shaft and the back of the roto casing or else the shaft will back out under the engines pressure. If this happens the bearing could get damaged and the engine will shut off because there will be a huge air leak. What i do for all my picco engines is add a hex nut the same size as the hex on the one way shaft. This will hold the shaft in place and is a permanent fix. I have one engine with 8+ gallons with this fix and it works perfectly. The nut is getting a little round on the edges but apart from that its still going fine.

I agree with Someguy, I have a heck of a time with Picco exhaust and have not found a good replacement soluton!
Here is my answer to Joe's question in the other thread....
I run the little hose looking gasket as long as I can scrounge one up. I have been going to stop by the auto parts store and see if I can find a like sized or a little thicker hose to cut sections off of. The rib in the silicone gaskets gets pinched and the silicone tears. The Tower Terror ones do not work and the Hpi ones also do not hang in there very long. I had some black ones with no rib that worked pretty good, but I cannot remember where I bought them. Bud
