I need some opions on this damage
My friend bought a Savage X for his step son for his birthday. After having it for a couple days it suffered fatal damage. He stepped on the antenna then tried to flip the truck over with his hand. The antenna wire broke so my friend bought a new stock radio & receiver from ebay for ultra cheap. Accidents happen so it's no big deal. I soldered the old antenna wire back together & now he has a backup.
About a week later he was driving it off a blacktop driveway onto grass. It's about a 1 foot drop. He flipped it onto it's lid & moments later it wouldn't move. We knew the spur had to be replaced after a glance.
He complained about the brakes not working very well so we took a look at those. The pic doesn't do it justice. I usually seal the edges of my disks with CA glue but I didn't think about doing it to his truck during break in. If anything the new & improved disks shouldn't need it.
I replaced the spur gear & picked up the engine & plate so I could screw it onto the transmission. My friend stopped me & asked me to look at the plate.
I had noticed the head looked a little banged up but I hadn't inspected it so I took a closer look.
The black marks could not be wiped off with alcohol & a rag. They wouldn't flake off so I don't think it's melted plastic from the roll cage.
I should've taken a picture of the body. The rear window looks like it caught the engine & was smashed hard. It has some pretty severe creases & the sticker is ripped along the crease.
So with what we know, can anyone out there explain how a Savage X could end up with this much damage after being driven off a 1 foot drop onto grass & doing some cartwheels through grass?

RE: I need some opions on this damage
LOL.
There is no way a 1 foot drop onto grass did that.
The kid landed on the lid at the skate park but forgot to mention it to stepdad.
It looks like a mark from blacktop, not topsoil.
Watch this vid of my buddies Savage X landing on a fence from 20 feet up.
He had NO DAMAGE from this.
His truck is the green Savage X that clips the fence short of the landing.
Mine is the blue Savage XL that clears the fence and wheelies away.
I broke the already torn silicone exhaust coupler causing the instant lean condition.
Fixed that with free automotive heater hose from work.

There is no way that damage is from the little hiccup you describe.
Make sure to check the shaft that spur gear sits on,
they are known for bending and that thing took a nasty hit somewhere.
My XL takes some serious punishment and so does RC Sancho's X.
Something is fishy...

+1 ive tore my truck up and havent even come close to that. that mark looks like asphalt to me. that truck looks like it took a hard landing on its lid. not a 1' flop on grass. that bent engine plate probably screwed up the mesh to strip the spur. hopefully the truth comes out so you know what happened and good luck with the repairs. too bad so much damage on a new truck....

No damages from all of the tumbles that Savage X took in that video.

No damages to anything but the servo arm in all of these cartwheels.

Quite a few bad landings on concrete and no damage.
I am thinking somebody needs to fess up, there is no way a 1 foot drop did that. Glen

I'm with all the others. 1 ft drop in the grass... doubt it.
Jumping a ramp and landing upside down on the street.... Yep!!!!.
Take the motor hold 1 ft above the ground at "said location of damge" and throw it down. See if the other side is dented... Not from 1ft into grass....

there seems to be more to the story than what the kid is telling you. it does look like it happened from landing upside down on asphalt, not a 1ft landing in grass. where do you think the black stuff came from? grass is green

RE: I need some opions on this damage
yeah maybe at 40 MPH you might get that tho like everyone one else i highly dought thats all from a 1ft drop, mines taken 10 ft to the roof onto hard dirt, not pavementy but it was moving and it hit hard my motor plates fine, i just have 1 bent fin,
it def. wasn't a 1ft curb that was some speed he had going when the truck ate it, and from some hight too...
the lug

From about 1 foot i landed upside down on the road after a little jump and all that broke was an engine mount and i didnt get a bent head from that, just some scratches.

I wheelied one over backwards at about 30 mph and slid for a very long time, long enough to grind about halfway through the roll bar and ground the body mounts down way past the flange. It did a horrible scar job on my Picco 28, really ugly... It did not mash the fins or break the engine plate though.

RE: I need some opions on this damage
Kind of off topic...Kinda
But, this can save an engine mount and may be helpfull for the future games of savage lawn darts.
Here's a tip if you have the engine mount with the extra hole in the front under the nose of the engine.
(A stock one, I got one with and one without... :S)
Get a grub screw from the hardware and snug it to the underside of the engine.
Not tight but just enough to give some support in the front of the engine.
Use plenty of loctite and let it dry good.
You would do this when the engine is tightly mounted already to the mount itself of course.
Here's a pic of the one without the extra hole, and an Integy one that has the extra hole in front.
Mine is a stock HPI mount, but has the boss and hole like the Integy mount.
STOCK WITHOUT BOSS AND HOLE
INTEGY HEAT SINK MOUNT WITH HOLE

RE: I need some opions on this damage
I made an educated guess before he left with the truck. He had a chat with the driver then sent me this email...
It looks like we had some spot on guesses! Thanks for reaffirming my guess!
Hey man,
What u thought was right on! He was heading towards the driveway! It jumped when he hit that bank, but instead of landing it started to flip and rolled end over end on the blacktop! That's probably tar on the headn might be plastic but I doubt it! He isn't sweating it though, wants to know how much and when that new Savage is coming out! Kids, go figure! Thanks for the help!
