Default Aerofly 5 - patch video problem : Fixed!

The last patch for Aerofly 5 seems to be causing problems with textures when it is initially launched.

The symptoms are dark or flickering ground or terrain photoreal image textures particularly on PANO terrain.

This occurs ( but it may not be exclusive to... ) with Nvidia WHQL drivers on multi-GPU video cards and multi-core processors.

I've been able to reproduce the problem with both G2xx series and G4xx series video cards, running four cores under Vista and Windows 7 on separate machines.

Strangely exiting Aerofly 5 and re-entering it again eliminates the problem when it occurs... as if the only thing at play is initial gamma correction settings for SOME ( but not all ) loaded textures.

When the problem occurs it affects all airfields. Once you restart reloaded ( other ) airfields are affected until you exit again.

That said AF5 otherwise runs smoothly on these systems and the level of 3D detail is quite amazing. Kudos to the developers on this!

This sounds like a minor issue initializing video, which may have an easy fix ( e.g. initializing the card twice? ).

Whatever is currently up: I believe it is 5.1.0.3

I installed from the DVD's then performed the update to that version from the web site.

When I click on the web site download icon the file downloaded ( 217mb in size ) says AF5-V5010001.exe

Gotta love flying an RC plane through the island towns... what a trip. Great 3D detail density too.

The scales are off however. A 70" wingspan plane takes up the whole width of the roads, even on panos.

Someone should adjust this if possible.

It turns out that the openAL32.dll library installed by Aerofly 5 is NOT the most recent version.

I found that I had a more recent version in the Windows\system32 folder.... so I copied it to the Aerofly executables folder and tried that, but the problem remains.

Some background textures continue to be displayed with what appear to be different gamma settings, resulting in much DARKER textures in some areas.

An adjacent texture will have the correct color, making things look quite bad.

opjose, I've given a feedback to the developers on this and they were not able to reproduce it. Try using an older nvidia driver and see if it helps with your setup. A new patch is coming out soon and I will keep you updated.

Here are screen captures showing the problem...

Airport loaded after program started with another airport first... bad texture gamma.

Aerofly reloaded with same airport loading during startup... good texture gamma.

FYI: I've tried updating/replacing all of the OpenAL32.dll's and wrap_oal.dll on my systems with the same newer versions, but this produced no change.

More info:

I did a complete driver uninstall and re-install, then completely removed Aerofly and re-installed it.

When I do NOT install the patch, but rather run the sim with the files installed from the DVD's there are NO texture problems WHAT-SO-EVER.

At first I thought that either something on my computer or the Nvidia drivers were to blame as the problem disappeared.

Then I installed the patch again, and the problem immediately re-appeared.

It seems to be something within the patched executable itself or one of the updated config files.

The openal32.dll, etc. did NOT change between versions ( the update does not touch these files at all )...

Unfortunately the AFDP forums are mostly in German so I am unable to look for solutions on their site.

I tried Aerofly 5 on a different machine I have running XP, and using an Nvidia 8800 board... exactly the same result... same texture problem, etc.

So it is not the O.S. or the hardware, nor the driver, just the patch is to blame.

The unpatched version of the software runs fine w/o this issue at all...

Fixed!

The latest beta patch eliminated the problem!

Read about it here: [link=http://www.ipacs.de/forum/showthread.php/4802-Aerofly-5-patch-video-problem-With-Examples...?p=18602#post18602]Beta Patch Thread.[/link]

I don't know why I cannot seem to edit the title of the original thread post... I wanted to change it to end with "Fixed!!!"

Hi Mark,
I have just installed Aerofly 5 upgrade. I have been having a ball with it. Using an ATI 4650 with no problem. What I have a question about is this.
I am missing some planes in my program as to what is shown as included in my program on Ikarus website.

Specifically the Bobcat and Hawk eye. Does the patch af5-v50110001 fix this?

Should I run this download?

What planes have tail hooks? I can find none.

If I had a jet with a hood, would it catch the wire on the carrier?

Thanks so very kindly.
