Default Gl Hobbies Ultimate

does anyone have any experience with the GL Hobbies Ultimate? It's big and the price is right, but how does it build and fly? What size engine are you using?

I built one this spring, and built it the way he said. It lasted 9 flights when the right wings broke in a low rate snap. This a a short kit and the plan for the formers are all to small. You must cut out with paper first to check the size. There are a lot of good kits or ARF's that fly well. Spend the the money and get something that works.

You have no idea how I build or how many years I've been doing it. You also don't know the times I talked to him on the phone. If you are happy good for you. I know how I built the plane and the advice I listened to. Take what I said with a grain of salt

Hey Dennis,
Just curious, did this Ultimate use flying wires? What size sheeting were the wings and where did they break? I'm building a couple scratch Bipes and am as curious about what doesn't work as much as what does.

Thanks,

I would like to set the record straight. This plane is a great flyer when you fly it like a Cub. This is what I would like to see changed. 1. Leave the fuselage in one piece (not three) 2.All formers pre-cut 3.All metal pre--bent 4. Carbon fiber wing joiners 50% of wing l5. Increase wing cord 10%. I know that this increases cost, but I wouldn't mind paying the difference. Some kits are painful to build and others are not. Now I'm building a Aerotech 37% Edge and I'll be sorry too see it ready to fly. Dennis

I built one of the 42% Giles. It was a night mare to build. No wing tube at all. It was constructed with blade spars using 3/8 aircraft ply. Very heavy set up that is not very accurate. The fiberglass was ok. It had a ton of pin holes in it. Looked like you sprayed primer on a piece of screen wire. The foam was actually really nice. These airplanes could fly very well but I could build two Carden 40% airplanes in the amount of time it would take to build one good G+L airplane. It was a ton of work and I wasn't very pleased with the end result. An overweight airplane that took twice as long to build as any other kit out there. I flew the plane 25 times and never did get it to fly very well. Basically there are many others out there. Once you figure in how much it takes to complete the G+L you are going to spend more on it than the other options. And it will take twice as long to complete. I know the owner and we are good friends. I just think there are much better options for airplanes out there.

Thanks guys, this is the kind of information I needed to make my decision, minus the argument. I would like an Ultimate in this size but if it requires a ton of labor I know that i wont enjoy it especially if there are structural questions.
