Default Bucker Jungmann

To Dick Hansen:

I corresponded with you over a year ago about your TOC Jungmann and obtained the excellent plans and 3-views from Larry Lutton.

Well, I've gotten the bipe buzz again and want to build a big Jung over the next several months to compete in IMAC next year. Currently, I'm flying the 36% WH Extra (you may recall my recent postings about tail wag).

I'd like to produce a version that would accommodate a DA 150 and I've found what I believe is your comments on larger bipes:

"If you just gotta do one - use as a guideline - aprox the same wing area as a monoplane - not much more ! for a 150/160 size engine -stay under 3000 squares - more like 2500. Weight can be a problem for new builders - you want wing loading on the smaller ones to be around 20 oz to th sq ft- on the big ones - stay UNDER 30 . Oh yes - clip the wings 10% all of em --"

Just playing with various scales, a 35% version would have a 102" WS and 2333 S.I. 40% may be too much at 116" WS and 2667 S.I. As for clipping the wings, and staying within the 10% IMAC rule, would getting the span close the overall length be a good goal?

Now, I'm a long way from competing at the unlimited level in IMAC, but I'd love to let my friends flying in Unlimited try this A/C and be convinced! As for myself, just competing with a unique and beautiful Bucker would be great fun.

I'd much value your advice in my consideration of this project.

OK-- which outline are you scaling?
the full scale span?
if so - figure on the wing area of the clipped setup. The reason the Ultimate works is that the aspect ratio is low .
Long wings are no good for The current IMAC stuff.
I am now doing a Cassut -for Unlimited IMAC
We did a pair of big ones for Dave Patrick - which had wings supplied by another builder.
anyway - stick with the clipped and about 2600 squares -
Overpowered is simply a figment of someones imagination

FYI-- I was talking to Dave Patrick last year at Joe Nall and he still has the Jungman Dick built for him that he flew in the TOC and modeled the Goldberg after. Dave still has his for sale if you need a good deal on a big one right now. I don't think you can build one cheaper than his. PM me for the details if you are interested. Wish I could put it in my budget/trailer/garage, etc...

Dick:
The 35 & 40% spans noted were taken from the full scale outlines of Larry's 3-view Jim Moser drawings (24'-4" span) and the areas were calculated guesses. If we take the 10% allowed off the full scale span (down to 21.9') it gives us a 40% span of 105" and about 2500-2600 S.I. 40% scale length would be 100.8". This appears to put it in the size/ weight neighborhood of the H9 Ultimate. I want to stay with the DA 150 on cans however, so I'm looking for optimal area/weight/power in this displacement class. What do you think?

By the way, is the Dave Patrick plane you mentioned bigger than the 77" version in my plans? If so, what are its basic dimensions?

And yes, power is intoxicating!

AJF:

Probably would still want to build my own but as in my reply to Dick, I'd like to see Dave Patrick's planes' dimensions and other specs.

Do you know IMAC's new webmaster, Roy Barrow, also from N.C.? Nice guy and very helpful in my last IMAC contest.

OOPS!
I need to check my math before posting! That's what I get for daydreaming about airplanes when I should be working.

A 40% with the clipped wings would come in at about 3300 sq.in. The 2600 sq.in. would equate to about a 35 to 36%'r.

Not sure about the size-- Dick would know more about that (since he built it)-Or better yet, you could email Dave from his website. I do know it is big.
I am not an IMAC guy -- plus I did not know anybody in NC was involved. You never hear of any contests close by at all. - sorry.
