Default Plane choices

With practice most any one will be. Carden 35% // Aeroworks //
Radiocraft are all good choices. The qualifier at last years Masters
(Not the contest) was won with a RadioCraft 35% compting against 40% planes. Skill and practice are the key.

Hi,

Try the 3W 36% Extra330S with the new light 3W100.

Plane is designed (and also flown by) by TOC pilot Wolfgang Matt and has excellent building quality and prefabrication degree.

I am currently flying the 32% version. It flyes beautifully both sequences and 3D. I am currently building the 36% based on my experiences with the 32%.

Best regards

As stated above, just about all of the 33% - 35% planes are competitive. One additional plane to consider - the 33% Fiberclassics Extra 330. I have a freind who has one and it flys GREAT!!!! Came in at 24lbs 6 oz. w/ a DA 100, regular mufflers, and a smoke system. He did not paint it - got just the white w/ red underside and then had Kirby do a red and blue graphics package for it. Looks REALLY sharp!

Default YEP !!

Yep , I agree with all the above. We are flying a 36 % AW Edge that flys as well or better then some of the bigger ones and it weighs about 27 lbs. We are only at the Sportsman level, but I know it will do well at th eupper levels too. Here is a pic of Chris (14) with it after winning 1st in Freestyle at a IMAC meet in Goshen, NY. The plane is a real blast to fly and have FUN with !

I think if you get any of those planes you could not go wrong. I am getting a 40% Carden 330. I flew frank noll's extra and it flys better then my Pattern planes. The snaps are sweet just lead a little with elevator and jam the sticks and it comes out on the same line you started. I think the new 35% 330 is going to be even better with better power to weight ratio. I think the plane really excells in Rollers and rolling loops. You can add as much rudder you want and the fuse stays on line and the angle of attack changes. If i had enough money I would have all these planes. Also if your looking to get a plane in the air fast Aeroworks has the 33% 330L Arf. I seen if at the Toledo show and it looked great. Well I better stop drooling!

I do not believe there is a plane in this class better than the 35% Troy Built Models extra 260.

Mine is 102.5" WS. Weighs 22.9lb with a DA 100, dual receivers, 3 1650mAh NiMH packs, dual aileron servos, and an aluminum spinner.

This plane is so much better than Carden, Aeroworks, even fiber classics that I hate giving away the secret. Check them out at www.troybuiltmodels.com. There's a link in his customer pics to a review of mine if you're interested.

Rolling circles can be done smoothly at 1/4 to 1/3 power. Down lines don't pull. Rudder coupling is minimal. Spin initiation with just elevator and rudder is incredible.

For the freestyle, this thing can do hovering inverted flat spins, easy torque rolls, walls, blenders, harriers, and even fly backwards (1/3 throttle level flight. Then full elevator and chop throttle. Plane rotates 120 degrees. Full opposite elevator to 180 degrees and you're going backwards for about 2-3 seconds).

Yay! barryb, another Troy Built fan!

I'm getting mine this weekend at the DOGS show in Dayton, OH.

I'm curious, did you get the 1 or the 2 servos per wing?

I went with full span ailerons and 2 servos/wing. I used JR DS9411 for the wing servos.

You are gonna love your TBM.

You can get all the details on mine at http://www.boesusa.com/~bab/extra260/extra260.shtml.

I fly a carden 35% extra 300s. It flys very nice and it is very competetive. If you have been to alot of contests latley and talked to pilots there seems to be a trend leaning towards one plane,at least out west, and that is the radiocraft 35% extra 330. I see more and more of these every contest and they look to fly very straight and are very light also. Ask advanced and unlimited flyers in your area. There the ones that realy know.

If you can find a H9 CAP 232 (1/3)--get it -It is the lightest of the H9 series - Or the new Sukhoi.
Properly setup - with a strong lite engine -they will compete with the most expensive of the custom kits.
The "unknown" part is you--
Having built these - and flown em with some of the others mentioned above -we could find no problems with them flying any of the sequences for IMAC.
The Troybuilt is the lightest of the aforementioned airframes -and a good flyer
If you are on a budget - the CAP- a ZDZ80 single and decent servos will put in a completely competitive setup.
If the budget is of no consequence - well --any of the stuff above mentioned is also fine .
They really don't "fly" better tho -
That part is up to you

Hello all,

I was (and still am) interested in the 3W Extra 330S. I was told to talk to Boli Muentes who flew the 32% and now has the 40%. I told him that I was wanting the 36% since it was designed for the 3W 100. He told me that it would be cheaper to go with the 32% with something like a 3W 75TS. Since I live close to Quique Somenzini, he said that I could come look at his (32%) when he gets it.

I would also agree with barryb, the troy built models are impressive. The price is reasonable for an ARC and different from all the CAP232,Edges and Giles out there. Wish I'd have seen this one before I got my 50% CAP 232. I saw a Lionaire Extra 260 flown by Andy Kane and the Extra 260 is an impressive design. I also think the Carden and Radiocraft offer some very competitive planes.

I flew a 35% Carden Cap last year and thought there was nothing better. This year I have a 35% Radiocraft Extra. The Radiocraft flies much better than the Cap. I think most of it has to do with weight. The Cap is 29 pounds with a 3W100 and the Extra is 26 with a ZDZ80 single. Wing span and area are about the same but the Radiocraft does the slow flying stuff much better. I still love my Cap, but the Radiocraft is the one I fly.

Default DS9411's

BarryB,

I think you just saved me $400. I was going to buy (4) DS8411's for the ailerons on my new AW 33% Extra. I already have (4) DS9411's - two in the drawer and two in the DP330L that I will sell soon. Cool. Now I just need to know which engine to put in the AW Extra. My first choice was a DA100, but is there anything lighter with the same torque. It looks like there are lighter engines.

drandles,
Glad I could help. For the 100 CC class, I haven't experienced anything better than the DA 100. The ZDZ 80 will save you a pound or so, but at the expense of significant power (IMHO, there are other opinions out there).

The new engines I have my eye on are the ZDZ 100 twin (5.1 lb) and the up and coming BME extreme 110 (3.8 lb?!). Neither are available or have a track record yet. Wait, get one, and let us know!

Barrry - The DA100 is a fine engine- no question about it.
If one is looking for power per pound tho - the ZDZ80 -on a quiet tuned pipe still is the one to beat.
A good, quiet , tuned exhaust system will run about 1 pound per cylinder - give or take a little for either the 80 or the 100.
The 80 's setup correctly -will swing 26x10 Menzs - as a example only -over 6500 rpm
The bigger props such as the 27x10 MenzS and the 28x10 Mejzlic - also run well with it -
Actually the 28x10 Mejzlic seems to be no more load than the 27x10 --strange -
Anyway -I don't know what setups you typically see - on ZDZ or DA100
but for $700 bucks - a 80 single with the pipe is quite a bargain-and very competitive on power -We swap props with 100 twin engine owners so this isn't a guess.
I am also very keen on seeing how the new ZDZ100 works -
I have one ordered --
These new engines are sure a far cry from the Husquvarna refugees of the recent past!

I figured someone would step up for the ZDZ 80. Someone always does, which says quite a lot.

I've never personally seen a ZDZ 80 turn a menzS 26x10 at more than 6300 on mufflers. My DA 100 turns a MenzS 27x10 at 6500 on mufflers. 11 oz total weight for mufflers on the DA 100 and it meets the IMAC sound restrictions. It takes ~1 HP to get from 6400 to 6500 RPM on a menzS 26x10.

All that said, I've been tempted more than once by the pound or more the ZDZ 80 would save. Not to mention the $500.00.

Does your ZDZ 80 start well? Everyone I know with one has to fool with it to get it started and I've been looking for someone with the right formula to help them out.

What I see at the field is choke on, ignition on, flip 'till it pops, choke off, flip 4-5 times to start. What are they missing?

The numbers I gave are correct - and repeatable - again - I use only tuned exhaust setups -
The std ZDZ80 setup is typically quite good.
I also found that the Walbro WJ38A is a excellent replacement for the Bing -usually supplied.
No power change but better cold and warm starts --typically.
Also- glass smooth transition and idle.
They are not expensive .
I purchased two used 80's a year ago -which the fellow supplied with another Walbro carb design- these were frankly -unuasable -
Thru blind luck - a friend had a spare WJ38A which he sold me to try-
Again thru luck- this carb proved to be a perfect match for the engine - on the pipes also.
The throttle response builds smoothly from slow even idle to full power with no change in th rate of increase - even runup slowly.
At our 4350 ft elevation- Thi setup turns the 27x10 MenzS at 6200-6300
and the Bambula 26x10 at the same .
The MenzS is simply too loud tho - barking easily at part throttle.
The starting you noted is typical here on the various 80's.
The Walbro does seem to be the best hot -or second flite starter.
Typically - engine at low idlle - engage ignition - first flip starts .
Some modelers are loath to try different carbs on their engines -but my experience shows that there can be more difference in carbs - within the same brand -than there is between brands.
Anyway -this setup in a 22.5 lb Extra I have -modified from H9 ARF- has more power thru the Unlimited sequences that the typical 100 powered setup.
Fully competitive and relatively inexpensive.

Default tuned exhaust

Very interesting guys. Dick, where or how do you tune the exhaust on the ZDZ80.

Anyone have an ETA on the BME110 or the ZDZ100?

You've told me so far that one of you likes a Chevy and one of you likes a Ford, except the Ford was modified to complete with the Chevy.

I don't know why some people are having starting problems with the ZDZ-80. No problems at my field and there are a half dozen of them all with stock Bing carbs. All but one are running in-cowl mufflers. I can verify what DH is reporting about power. The 80 single with a Krumscheid can set to 12 inches header length turns a Menz-s 27x10 at 6300 rpm and a Menz-s 26x10 at 6600 rpm. We're at low altitude, so it's plenty of power even up to 29 lbs. The engines with in-cowl mufflers turn a Menz 26x10 at 6300-6400 rpm - this is plenty of power up to 25 lbs.

Drandles - you did not mention that the modified Ford was half the price of the Chev--
Also since when is a pipe a mod?
just because some mfgrs claim it is -?
In some parts of the world -and the US- pipes are the norm.
The tuning is dead simple - add one 12" header - one KS 80 size can --go fly - it is that easy on the ZDZ.
I am not making fun - it really is that easy -
I make a small tunnel under the belly of models such as Cap/ Extra/ Dalotel/ 202 etc., etc., and using a simple Bernzomatic torch and Map gas - braze up a single turn header and a short flex section.
No special tools req'd.
Look at my 33%Cap on my web page -
