Hanger 9 Extra 330S w/3W 106???
I am hoping to get into IMAC next year and have a friend offering to sell me his H9 Extra 330S and 3W106. How would this combination perform in IMAC? Is this too much engine for this plane? I had been thinking that I would go with a DA100 if I had to purchase new, but I fugure the 3W would do also. From reading other threads, it seems like it more of a personal perference as much as anything. What is the significance of the "blue head" on this engine?
Thanks for any comments.

The 106 will be fine on the plane, lots of H9 33% planes with 106s on them. Keep them under 26lbs if possible, carbon gear, wingtube, etc. I dont see any advantage going with a DA over the 106 though. Also, if you decide to go a little bigger down line, you will have the 106 for it as well. The plane will be a rocket with the 3w on it, but throttle management will help a lot, and maybe a 3 blade to absorb some of the power, and keep it quiet for imac. Havent really found an extra that does not fly good if setup right. The blue heads mean that it is an aircraft international series of 3w, thats all. It might be a TOC, if so it will be stamped on the case.

Would I see much difference between this plane and the Wildhare Edge/Da50 that I am presently flying...remember, I am talking Basic.

yes, significant difference, first, its quite a bit bigger, and bigger flys better, and second, an extra is almost always prefered for imac over an edge just due to the way they fly, and the H9 extra will 3d pretty darn good too. You dont have to spend a ton of money to compete in imac, but do want the best tool for the job that you can provide, so get something you can use in basic, and in some of the more advanced classes later on.

You will not as much see the difference but feel it.
Do to the size of the plane, many of your low speed maneuvers will appear slower and you will be able to fly more precise. I guess this is seeing a difference. I have had the WH with a Brison 3.2 and I have a 33% H9 and BME 102 and I can fly the H9 a lot better and show my skills at a higher level with the larger plane.

The Blue head is a TOC engine, it has a fiberglass air horn on it, and some better port tuning.. a few more RPMs and smoother midrange. One of the best engines out there. I have a QQ 106, basically the same engine... but red heads.
You will have no problem with power and should easily get under 26 pounds full up. I put one together recently - under 20 pounds with a ZDZ 80 and carbon everything!

AU Flyer.
Gald to see more interest in IMAC in the area. We are hosting an IMAC in Pensacola, June 17--18th. Hope to see you there. I fly the H9 330 33% with a 3w 75. Competed at Cullman. Would recommend more power. Its a good plane, but needs a few changes. Carbon fiber gear would help greatly. Hope to see you in Pensacola in June.

RE: Hanger 9 Extra 330S w/3W 106???
Thanks for the comments guys; sounds like this plane would work to get me started. I do know that if I get it, it will have to go on a diet. It has a smoke system, nimh batteries and three servos on the rudder. I plan to take the smoke system out and convert to lipo's. Will one JR8611 handle the rudder?
BullardRM, too bad there are not more contests in this area, maybe over time that will change. I would like to make it to Pensacola, hopefully I can.

AU, I would go with a single 5955 on the rudder, the 8611 is good, but the 5955 has a little more power and a more robust gear train. Other good options would be the jumbo hitec 5735 or a futaba 9152.

RE: Hanger 9 Extra 330S w/3W 106???
The three rudder servos are Hitec5645's with a JR matchbox. I was thinking that I could save some weight by going to one strong servo and eliminate the matchbox also. I have just used 8611's in other planes, but they were 28%. It also has a Smart Fly Equilizer on the two elevator servos. I'm not familiar with equalizers. Why would you not just plug both servos into the receiver?
