Hi there.... No...You do not need to have a pilot/instrument panel in BASIC. Just make sure that you get in some practice of the sequence with someone who has had some experience in IMAC. This will put you further along than you can imagine.
Practicing & perfecting the wrong things can take a long time to "undo".
I'll be there on the Friday for practice...so if you need any help, just let me know.

Jon, there are no specific plane requirements in the Basic class, even including having a scale plane. It would be nice to have you out at the contest as it is always good to see new folks trying IMAC. As of now it looks like I'll be there in Fayetteville. I have the white and red Comp-ARF.

Well right now unless something happens I am going to be there bright and early,,,,, I have been learning just the maneuvers now,, by maybe middle of next week I am going to get one of my buddies to call for me and try to start putting it all together for real,, I guess that is the best way, learn manuevers and then put them in the sequence,,,

I will tell you what I see mostly in Basic class.
Most guys fly way too close in. Start your sequence about 250 to 300 feet out. Fly the horizontal lines at 2/3 throttle. Uplines and your 45 degree uplines use full power only. Get off the throttle fairply soon on downlines.
Establish all you lines. A good example is the 1/2 reverse cuban. Pull to the 45, establish line for a 2 count, roll, establish the line for a 2 count then pull the 5/8 loop.
On the hammer and spin, establish that 90 degree dowline before the pull out.
Check to see what your throws are. they should be close to:
Elev, 10 degrees
rudd, 15 degrees
Ail, 20 degrees
Expo, 30 on elev and ail, 40 on rudder.
Granted these are beginning numbers and will have to be fine tuned but they will get you in the ballpark. I see lots of new guys with rates much higher wondering why their airplane is all over the place.

The yellow box in the left column will get you the Known sequence for any class you're interested in. Just pick the class you want and click on "Go".
If you're in Ryan Gonsoulin and Phil Oubre's neighborhood, take the opportunity to practice and travel to contests with them. They are experienced competitors.
Good luck at your first contest!!
Take care,
Dean

I am working on being there as well. Don't know yet.
Just go to have fun. Perfect practice makes perfect but the people is what makes the event.
I go to have fun and to not come in last.
Once those two things are accomplished then I am happy!
