31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
I just purchased the Edge and was wondering which engine to buy? This will be my first gasser and my first large plane.
Thanks |

ORIGINAL: The_Weatherman I just purchased the Edge and was wondering which engine to buy? This will be my first gasser and my first large plane. Thanks Also, the DA, 3W, Brison, BME, and ZDZ 50cc engines have better power than a G-62... My Brison 3.2 (53cc) turns a 22X10 Mejzlik prop at 7260 RPM. The spec sheet for the G-62 claims 7200 for a 22X10 prop... The G-62 is also at least a pound heavier, but it is also about $100.00 cheaper... Compromises... Compromises... |
RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
ZDZ 80
Guy at our club flies the Aeroworks 31% Edge 540 ARF with this engine. Now, keep in mind that we fly at 6000' above sea level. Air is thin. Engines loose power and planes fly mushy in thin air and they land hot because you gotta fly it faster to keep it going in this thin air. Plane weighs 21.5 pounds. Flies like nothing I've ever seen before. He just loafs along at 1/4 or 1/3 throttle and does anything he wants to. Plane flies light on the wing-which is impressive considering the thin air at this altitude. Most planes will have to fly faster at this altitude and land hot. Not this plane. It comes in at a crawl and settles in for a 3-pointer every time. He can pull vertical at 1/4 throttle and go straight up and do multiple vertical snaps and it just keeps going up at 1/2 or 5/8 throttle. When I say "multiple snaps" I don't mean 2 or 3. I mean he can snap it and then go up and then snap it again and then go up and then snap it again and just keep going for as many as he wants or untill it gets so small you can't see it. I've never seen him go full throttle for more than about 3 seconds once. He pointed it straight up at just over an idle and then hammered the throttle and it shot up like it came out of a friggin' cannon. Thats what I'd do if I was going to build that plane. |

I too would suggest more motor. THe DA 50 will fly that plane very scale but it will not have any usable extra power. The ZDZ 80 would be the max for me. The G62 is a log in my book. 3W 75 or the ZDZ 80. Cactusaviation.com and Aircraft Intl carry the 3W and rcshowcase carries the ZDZ.

RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
I've got the 31% Edge & I chose a ZDZ 60 for it.
I've got the 80 single in a AW Extra @ 23 lb. and another one in the AW Suhkoi @ 23 lb. LOTS OF POWER. Down here at "corn field level "the 80 single would come close to tearing the wings off the 31% Edge which I figure will come out at around 20 lb.The 60 single should have enough power. I picked the ZDZ 60(4lb.)over the 3W engines because it's a little lighter.Something to consider-the 3W 70 US is 4.75lb. vs. the 3W 75 @ 5.25lb. |
RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
Hi,
Isn't this supposed to weigh 18 lbs with a G62? http://www.aero-works.net/planes/540...ent/index.html Thanks John |
RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
Yup,what a plane is "supposed" to weigh & what it really weighs, usually are two different things. In most cases the advertised weights are very "optimistic".
I put on the wings, tail, hatch, landing gear, cowl & it came out at 9.6lb.Double that & the plane will come out around 20 lb. It's amazing how much everything adds up-engine,muffler,ignition,spinner,prop,batteries,whe el pants, wheels, tail gear, servos, extentions, linkages, hardware, etc. |
RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
The 3W 70 and the 3W 75ius weigh the same 4.75 lbs.

Yep,your right. On the Cactus site there is a discrepancy, however on the Int'nl.Aircraft site they are the same.

EJB
I bought my 75 instead of the 70 for that very reason. Can't go wrong with more power same weight, even I could figure that one out :) |

Cant wait to get mine in the air. Got a 3W 75 iUS in mine and balanced perfectly at the 2 inc in frotn of wing tube. Smoke to be installed later but not much room in this plane[8D]

RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
THe weight difference is due to the 150 believe it or not. They have lightened this motor considerably as it is the most popular. The result is a light 75 since it shares he jug. Look at the weight of the 140 and the 120. They are both BRICKS.

SO MUCH FRIGGIN SNOW...AIRPORT? |

mAvRiCk,
Have you weighed your plane yet? |
RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
balanced...yes but not weigh??? Sorry its around 18 last time i checked
see ya |

This thing looks like a real bargain at $595.00 from Chiefs. Is it as sweet as I have heard?

It costs the same at Aerworks and remember you do not get hardware. Pretty good price. Get your own hardware though!!!

RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
Is it just my imagination or has Aeroworks increased the aspect ratio on the 31% Edge compared to other renditions? The span looks a bit longer in the photos on their website compared to other Edges I have seen carrying similar wing area.

RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
well you guys can debate it all you want. The 31% best combination is the 3w 75 us or zdz 80.
With both you end up with a plane weighing only 19 - 20 lbs. The power to wieght ratio is better than 2 to 1. But most of all you have an airplane that when balanced right is an awsome performer. I flew mine at 3 contest and won first in all three . Then I got bumped up a class , While practicing real hard I ran my bat. down and lost the airplane. I had started a 35% carden edge with a qs 106 on it. The Carden is a great airplane but the 31% edge was just as good. I have a special place in my heart for 31% edge. Just an awsome flying airplane........ |
RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
I actually did replace lmost all the hardware. Thats what I meant to say. All TItanium Links. Aluminum arms and all. Snowed yesterday 8"...YUCK

RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with 3DRC on his DA-50 assessment for this plane.
I have seen this plane/engine combo, and it was spectacular. The plane weighed in at over 19lbs because of the weight he had to put up front to balance (rudder servos in the rear), but the plane absoloutely had unlimited vertical. Keep in mind that the DA-50 loves to swing bigger props than most in the same 50 class. He was swinging a 24X8 MenzS prop at around 6300rpms. |
RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
Hows the overall build quality on the 31%? I have heard several folks complain that the quality is not up to normal Aeroworks standards. A few of the problems were weak landing gear, weak firewall area and poorly sanded wing skins that required stripping, sanding and recovering. Your thoughts or comments??

RE: 31% aeroworks Edge 540T - DA-50 or G62?
I have the 31% AW 540T with a DA50 and it has plenty of power. It seems to go straight up right from takeoff roll with no problems. Another guy at my field has one with the G-62 and he seems to have sufficient power. Keep in mind that AW designed that plane for the G-62 and it will balance better with the heavier motor. I needed a pound and a half to reach the mid cg.
