IMAC Basic Sequence
 

I'm going to be flying IMAC this year instead of funfly competition. I've flown the basic pattern a few times, will practice it a lot when it warms up. I have some questions about how the manuevers are judged.

2nd Manuever is the hammer head in the pattern. When you pull up, do the stall turn part of it and go down. Do you pull out of the hammerhead at the same attitude you started it??? or do you go down futher on the downline?

Same thing with the Humpty bump. Do you pull out at the same attitude you started it at? Where at in the manuever are you supposed to do your half vertical down roll at? on the diagram on the imac site is looks like you do your half roll past the starting attitude??

For the 1/2 cuban 8's, you do you roll in the middle of the 45 line right, or two seconds starting the 45 line?

Spin, you have to stall it to go into the spin and have it vertical down.

Is there anything that tells you what the judges look for mistakes wise and how to do your areobatics correctly?

Pugs is right. Download the judging and flying guide because it will answer all of these questions. I'll try to give you brief answers here, too.

Hammerhead - Upline and downline can be of different lengths. It doesn't matter which one is longer. Important: make sure they are perfectly vertical and that the radii at the bottom are of equal size.

Humpty bump - same thing. Vertical up and downlines can be of different lengths - doesn't matter which one is longer. Do your 1/2 roll down CENTERED on the downline (however long that line may be). The diagram on the IMAC site is Aresti and is only drawn the way it is for clarity - where the 1/2 roll is drawn on that line is of no consequence in the judging.

Cuban - again, center the roll on the 45 degree line, however long you make that line.

Spins - read the judging guide here! Basically, the plane should stall to start the spin, and you should finish it with a vertical downline.

If you can get to a judging and flying seminar (not sure where you live, but there will be one in Muncie, IN in April). You will learn TONS and it will help you with all of these questions and more. Most of all - have FUN. This stuff is addictive, so watch out. Hope to see you flying this summer.

Hey Ryan! I noticed on your avatar, that you are from PA. Im from MD and this year I will start in BASIC! Read the Judging Guide several times, it is very helpful! I haven;t practiced the sequence yet, because of weather and other things! I will try to compete on every competition I can!.... I will start to practice soon as the weather gets better!

GO to the Judging school in the NE if you can.
It is worth the money if you want to know what the judges are looking for!

Alex, There will be an IMAC competition at my home flying field this year for the first time in Sacramento, PA on June 19 and 20th. And then the week after that we are having a Giant Scale flyin. It will soon probably be scheduled in the AMA book.

I echo rcplanefan's comment regarding spins. I received a zero during a contest last summer because the judge felt the airplane "rolled" into the spin instead of "breaking" into the spin due to a stall. Of course, I didn't see it that way! [sm=disappointed.gif] It's easy to get a zero on this figure if your flying in front of experienced judges ... be sure to read the guide and seek advice from a seasoned competitor.

What you need to do is hold the heading until the plan stalls and not force it. It will stall, just don't climb or loose heading.

You can't get a zero unless both judges agree that it's a zero. If both agree then you seem to be sol. I was there alot this year too.

Are you talking about the Harrisburg contest run by Pete Castine. If so it will be a great contest as all the regulars will be there normally around 25 to 30 pilots.
also there are 3 contest in PA this year Harrisburg, Shawnee and Milford all reasonable drives. The other 3 or 4 contest's are in Maryland being the Spring fling in Centerville area , Toc of Maryland in Baltimore and the Capi in Bowie. the farthest for me is the centervile and thats only 3.5 hrs from the middle of New Jersey.

Practiced spins today.I scibed for judges and they all said the same thing.You must stall into the spin.The good pilots seem to start the spin after the stall.If its too close to call they get a 4 or a 3.THe manuver looks super easy,but to do it and geta 8,9 or10 is difficult.I'll be trying sportsman this year.So I'll be looking forward to the 1 1/2 upright after the snap.

The Snap is the last maneuver so what are you saying. Not challenging you but don't know of any maneuver after the snap.

He probably means after the stall to start the spin??
Incidentally, if you snap your plane into the spin that's another automatic 0. The judges are looking for the trailing wing
to go over the previous flight path. If that happens then the plane never stalled and you either rolled into the spin or snapped it into
the spin. I saw that a lot last year in basic. People were more concerned about centering the spin than entering it correct.
Missing the center a bit was a point or 2 deduction, missing the stall, well, then you made the judge's life easier cause now
they don't have to look at the rest of the figure:)

Kevin, No i'm not talking about the IMAC meet that the HAFS club runs or used to. I used to fly at that club but its getting grown in and interference.
There is going to be a new IMAC meet in Sacramento, PA this year. 1st annual. I fly there now instead of Harrisburg. The club is only a few years old and is wide open, really huge and nice. Pete Castine is going to be running the IMAC at Sacramento. It just I think got agreed to, so it should soon be in AMA model Aviation.

It's already scheduled and it's still called the Harrisburg contest. We flew at another field last year not Harrisburg but still fell under the same name. Pete Castine runs a great contest. Hope he gets some door prizes this year before the baskets are empty though. We gotta keep Dans fingers busy.

Nope my dumb a** is still talking about 2003.I didn't know they changed every year.So, I've been practicing 2004.And yes the snap is at the end!!!!My bad.I really like the new sequences.Like the 2of4 and 2of8.Seems to spice it up abit.Are you pulling the last vertical on the figure N,In the middle of the box or just past center??

You need to go to the judging manual and practice all of the legal maneuvers. Your unknowns will allow you to move up in the standings if you are ready for them.

Hey Kevin, How's the Comp ARF coming along?

Wait till you see this field. [sm=thumbup.gif] It is every bit as nice if not nicer than Watergap. Very much open, long smooth runway, no trees and the closest power lines are so far away that you would deserve to hit them if you ever did. I was at their club's fun fly last year and they are the nicest bunch of guys you could ever meet. I was trying to get Pete to look into this field for his IMAC since I flew there.

Their field is located about 15 minutes off of I81. The exit (Route 25) is about a 20 minute drive north of where I81 and I78 intersect. Hope this gives you an idea.

Kevin, not sure what part of Jersey you'd be coming from, but if you come across I80, I'd say it's exactly a 2 hour drive form the Watergap field.

The comp arf is almost done just playing with some little stuff then off to the paint shop.
I also bought Mike Brown's old 36% 3w extra for this year and picked up a Dave Patrick 120 size extra with a zdz40 to have some fun with. And I took the plunge on a 10x also :D What a sweet radio...
Hows your field? Almost ready to fly at, or still to wet?

Wow!, that's quite a fleet, all those GS plane and the two Wild Hare Giles. You da man! Looks like your going to need a bigger trailer!

Our field is still covered with snow. We're supposed to be in the 50's this weekend so I have set of skis for my SPA3D.

No JR challenge for me. I'd love to go sometime.
