It's been a long time since I posted any pictures, so here they are.

That is a nice looking Extra. If you haven't flown one, you are about to find out that there just isn't much better for precision flying. What servo setup did you decide to go with?

Thank you. I'm going with 8611. One per elavator, three on rudder and two per aileron. I have the servo bays cut out on the stabs for a second servo in case I need it .

You won't need the 2nd servo in the tail. Just don't go over 1.25" on the servo arms and you'll have PLENTY of power.

Just some minor things left and paint. But I bought a 36% 3w ready to fly and it fly's real nice I just have to fix some setup things on it. and I'm thinking about another 2.6 without a motor. I just don't have enough planes.
Ed and I would love to see your first flight if you plan on coming out to pocono.

What's your technique for polishing aluminum? I worked for four hours the other night, trying to polish a True turn spinner, and it still looks like crap. Any info appreciated!

Hi Pete, try using a piece of threaded rod to chuck your spinner cone in a drill press set to low - medium speed. Starting with 600 grit al/oxide paper you work on removing the fine machining marks in the aluminum. As the finish progressively improves you move to 800, 1000, and so on until you can switch to rubbing compound. The rubbing compound will begin to bring out a mirror finish, once you've got that you finally go with an aluminum polish like Mothers to top it off. One word of caution . . . watch the prop cut outs if you use the drill press method - they'll bite.

Thanks, Ty. I made it from 600 grit all the way to 1400, and then got disgusted after four hours because it still looked crappy. I had forgotten about rubbing compound, I'll have to try that out.

The Yak is still in the box. (a "yak-in-the-box" - get it?) I have the engine, pipes, servos, etc. I was just doing spring maintenance on my Extra, which I think will still be my primary competition plane this year until I figure the Yak out. I hope to start the Yak soon.

Hi, Pete. I stated with 220 to remove all the scratches, then 320 and so on all the way up to 1500. I then used rubbing compound. But even after that it wasn't as nice as I'd wanted it to be, so I took it to a place that polishes harley parts and they gave it the final polish for $30.00. Best $30.00 I ever spent. It looks like a mirror.

Oh no you don't! The test flight will not be this weekend thank you very much! [>:] I will not have that thing fly before my CA 2.6! You would be simply impossible to live will this entire season! I expressly forbid it! I gotta call Unger and get a delay put on those 8611's!;) Lol! Course I do have an excuse....I AM out of the country! (Albert you don't want to know where I am exactly......let's just say I have to go put something on my sunburn!:D) I'll be home late sunday (monday morning?) so I'll call you monday night. Looks like I'm gonna have to push for a mid week test flight.........Lol!

Oh yea...the Carden looks outstanding and I expect it will fly excellent. Can't wait to start turning my Carden box-o-lumber into an Extra!

Hi, Rob. I didn't fly it yet. The only thing left to do is install the aileron servos. I will be flying it either during the week or I might take it with me to the seminar next weekend and test fly it at shawnee after the seminar on sunday. So far I'm very impressed with the 8611s. They have lots of power and they don't buzz as much as 8411s. It looks like the airplane will come in at around 38.5 pounds. I had to install the batteries and receivers just in front of the turtle deck.

Cool. If you can bring it with you to the Seminar. I would love to take a look inside. Basically all I have left is sanding and covering . . . wich as you know takes a while :)
