Need a question answered. I am new to jets and see that its common to use a gyro. Why would that be needed?

Many times its not needed, but it may help during takeoff by keeping the plane tracking in stright line when used in the nose steering. other uses are in ailerons or rudder to keep plane level in gusty winds
