If I purchase a pre registered DX8 from some one getting out of RC, will I be able to download and install firmware updates?

Ummm.....

The first response you got is not exactly correct; you CAN download updates provided the seller de-registers the radio and you register it in your name. The updates are serial number specific and so that's what you have to do. Now if you buy a radio and the previous owner does not de-register the unit, Horizon/Spektrum can redo that stuff but IIRC it's kind of a hassle.
