Default 53 mhz still an option?

I have a jet set up with a 53 mhz receiver. Is it still legal and safe to use. ( I have a ham license)
Thanks,
Jetboy

Legal yes.
Safe....i can't imagine running into too many people still using that band so I'd say yes.

Default Legal- Yes, Safe ???

Hi Jetboy. If you have a 53 mhz radio, it is still legal. Is it safe? Maybe, but probably not as safe as it could be. 53 mhz is susceptible to interference, if there is any. You do not own the ham frequencies and the 53 mhz frequency tracking at local flying sites has not been used for many years. The spread spectrum technology used in 2.4 ghz radios is normally not susceptible to interference. Jets are expensive and modern 2.4ghz radios can add some system redundancy that could make it safer, such as using multiple satellite receivers to ensure a reliable signal reception in all attitudes and redundant battery feeds. Is your 53mhz a computer radio with channel mixing capability such as flap to elevator? If not, then I would ask (per your ATP by-line), would you be comfortable flying a jet with a known deficiency (in this case susceptibility to interference)?
