Default Why do some people twist there servo-extension? Is this necessary?

Hello Everyone,

Well for some time now I’ve seen people twist there Servo wire to prevent any interference. That I know of (Pleas correct me if I’m wrong) this is done because the amount of the current isn’t steady at all times. This is due to the none to low - high usage of the servo and this is why the power (current & Amps ) isn’t at all times steady.
(servo is being use under different circumstances

To prevent this unsteady current flow in this long cable (“lead of wire” servo-extension), as it could have the tendency to begin to act as an antenna and catches the disturbing signals (electric field), they do twist the cable, to counteract this tendency.

And also there is an unsteady use of amps trough-out the cables (“leads of wire” servo-extension). So this could also lead to the tendency of cable (“leads of wire” servo-extension) to begin to act as an antenna and catches the disturbing signals.

And this is why some people use a ferromagnetic-material to close-up the cables (lead of wire), to counteract this tendency.

So did I understand correctly why they are twisting long servo-extensions and also why they close-up the servo-extensions with a ferromagnetic-material ?

And my other question is, is this all necessary?
Does this make such of a big difference?

And if so; if it does matter, how strong of a ferromagnetic-material should be used to close-up the servo-extensions? (cable (leads or wire) )

Thanks in advance for all the information.

Regards,
Danny Koolman

Hi everyone,

So is this being done to prevent any disturbing signals, so to speak to maximize the precision of the servo.

Could this also be related to the type of power source ( Gas, electric and glow engines )
Or is this more related to the type of frequencies that one use e.g. 72 MHz etc. that you get or have a chance to intercept any disturbing signals.

Thanks in advance for all the information.

The unsteady current flow has nothing to do with it. The fact is,When current flows through a wire there is a magnetic field generated around that wire.
That magnetic field could cause radio interference.
when you twist the wire the magnetic field in one twist will canceled the magnetic field in the next twist.

I an not an electrician but I did stay at a Holliday Express last night

I am watching you

Larry has the correct info on the effect. To answer the question of if it is necessary, no it is not necessary. It certainly won't hurt anything however, it can only help.

hello everyone,

So, one could never be too careful.
But Danny any comments on the ferromagnetic-material to close-up the cables (lead of wire)?
Any way ( method ) to know how strong it should be ?

Thanks in advance for all the information.

I suggest using these:

JRPA028 RF FILTER: SNAP STYLE (2)
JRPA029 RF FILTER: RING STYLE (2)

Hello Danny,

So by using the RF filters, is it still recommended to twist the servo leads ?
Or is this filter end-off ?

Thanks a lot for all the information.

I don't personally recommend twisting leads (I don't do it myself), so I guess that doesn't change with the filters. It doesn't hurt anything in either case however. The filters are recommended for any leads over 36".
