G`Day
Need some help with the build of the Phaeton 90, seems on the plans it shows 1/4"x1/4" size balsa stringers that run through the entire length of the fusalage.
My question is, the stringer that runs near the centre ot the fusalage is too stort to run the full distance (seems about 4" too short). Do we have to join this to get the overall length?
Only one is short on both sides of the fusalage!
The balsa that came with the kit has all the 1/4" x 1/4" the same short length.
If this has to be joined, where on the plans would be the best spot?
There is no mention in the instructions about joining!

I've built two of these but so long ago I do not recall any problems on stringer length, not that there were none. If you need to lengthen any, just use a scarf joint with the length of the joint at least three times the width or depth of the stringer and good wood glue, clamp while the joint is curing and it should be as strong as the none joined stringers. I love the design and have built both the 40 and 90 size. On my last 90 size I moved the firewall back, strengthened the landing gear and installed a Quadra 75cc gasoline engine. It turned out to be a ball to fly. Now I did increase the rudder size by at least 100% with some overhang at the hinge line to get a bit of aid for the servo as I used the old 40 inch/oz servos with no problems. Now that engine weighs 7 pounds so I did need to strengthen the firewall and make sure it was well attached to the rest of the plane. My first 90 used a 1.20 four stroke which was also a terrific amount of fun to fly.
