I am building my first plane, an Goldberg Eagle 2. I have run in to some questions and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. The instructions where surprisingly poor, and several peaces did not fit where they were supposed to, so I def came across some issues and have questions.

First of all, the instructions said build this on a pinning board so that you can pin the peaces of wood to the draft sheet. What is pinning board? Is that a real thing because I searched for it online and tower hobbies does not sell something called this. It also said use some sort of clear or wax paper so that you keep the draft paper in good condition without getting glue on it. I used saran wrap but it moves around a lot.

In the low quality pictures in the instructions, the person is gluing the ribs of the wing in after they have been set in place. I have been taking a rib putting glue in the notches then setting it in place with the trailing edge and the center beam (forget the name). The glue dries so fast that if I set it down crooked, trying to fix it will often snap the ribs. Can I put the parts in place and then put glue on top, does that work just as well?

Lastley, at least for the time being...notice in the picture that the top beam is not flat with the ribs 2 and 3 but does flatten out by rib 4. The book did not mention this obscurity, is this wrong?

Hi! Welcome to the wonderful world of building!

1) A "pinning board", although not an official term, is simply a surface that you are able to stick pins into. You would place your plan on top of it and use it to pin your parts to as you build. Many people (myself included) use a 24"x 48" drop ceiling tile. I don't know of anything that is commercially available specifically for this purpose.

2) Wax paper will probably serve your purpose better than Saran Wrap. Saran Wrap is too thin. Tape the wax paper down to your building board over your plan to protect it. There are commercially available plan protectors. I have never used one since wax paper has always worked fine.

3) It sounds as though you're using CA for construction. Get your parts into position then apply glue. As you have seen CA cures rapidly and will often do so before you can properly position your parts. Applying glue prior to positioning works fine for aliphatic resins or cements but not so much with CA. This is actually a positive characteristic of CA since it allows you to align the pieces and prevent them from "drifting" while the glue cures.

4) More than likely, ribs 1-3 are sheeted over. The sheeting will be flush with the spars (the center beams). Ribs 1-3 are therefore cut smaller to compensate for the thickness of the sheeting. Since the remaining ribs are not sheeted over they are cut larger. Study your plans and instructions very carefully to verify this.

Personally i use 1/2" drywall on top of my building table. Its cheap and pins hold well into it. Many people i know use hard foam boards or ceiling tiles. I also use reynolds wax paper on top of plans, again theres other things but its what i find easy for me. They sell plan protectors perhaps Great planes makes it. The brand eludes me atm.

you definitly should lay out the wing on the plans before gluing for just the reason you mentioned. If any alterations need to be made its a Pain and risk breaking the delicate balsa [:@]
I always use a square to keep them vertical to the building surface before gluing them in.

My next wing i will put the parts together and then glue them in place.  I just didn't think it would work as well if the glue did not get inbetween the peaces.

The ceiling tile is a great idea, no idea where to get one.  I will go to home depot see what they have there, and I'll get some wax paper.

Yes there will be sheeted cover on this part of the wing.  It's still not thick enough from first glance and comparison but I can sand it down if I need to.</p>

It looks like the spar is just slightly curving up at those three ribs, Check for an opening at the bottom of the notch(under the spar) in each rib and fill it with glue to improve the joint. if you find the same issue on the other panel, you may be able to press it down with a little bit of weight. I often use plastic bags filled with sand. Take your time and enjoy the build. Many of us(myself included) started with the Eagle kit, so someone can answer pretty much any question you dream up.

haha nice. Well Ijust bought a ceiling tile and i can already tell this will work much better plus it's bigger.

This is a question I'll ask now while ihave your interest. It will bea while until Iget to covering it, but I'd ideally like to use more then one color. I'd like to put a strip on the wing, or on the body of the plane. Is there any suggestion on this, or do Ijust cut out a design, and put it over the other monokote? People get there designs to match perfectly on both sides andI want mine to look good. Not important, just trying to pimp my ride if you will.

Hi Igmac, I covered mine with Ultra-Cote because I think it's easier than Monocote, just preference I suppose, anyway you will need a covering iron to do it and yes once the main covering is on and shrank you put the stripes right over it. Very easy to do, I'd go to their web site and down load their instructions and study them so you have an idea before you even start. I'm building a Tiger in this same section so I'll keep an eye on your build. I is a very nice plane and flies great.
