Default Tips on Goldberg Sukhoi

I'm putting the finishing touches on a CG Sukhoi and have a few questions:
* Will my Webra 1.20 be a good match.
* Should I paint the canopy frame. What color.
* How much rudder and elevator servo torque is req'd.
* What flight habits should I expect.

I found this kit to be a design disaster. Here's my list of gripes and modifications:
* Firewall and surrounding structure way too wimpy. I added 1/2 inch triangle stock and lots of fiberglass.
* Wing joining/landing gear mount also wimpy. I added fiberglass over wing center and landing gear plate.
* New control rods, of course.
* The cowling and belly pan system and brackets are a huge pain. I haven't figured out an improvement yet.
* Servo and radio mounting were not to my standards. This area was completely redesigned. Lots of scrap plywood to work with here.
* Even though the basic structural concepts were similar to the Ultimate 10-300, I found that kit to be wonderful and the Sukhoi to be miserable. IMHO

Any thoughts.

I have one as yet unstarted under the bench. A fellow club member has one that is very nicely powered by an OS 1.08, so your 120 Webra should work fine. FWIW, this fellow has 4 standard servos (around 40 oz/in torque) one for each elevator and aileron, while on rudder he has a 70 oz/in servo with a pull/pull cable setup. The plane will easily climb in knife-edge with this setup, by the way.

He also had to redo the LG arrangement in the wing as many failures have been reported with the stock setup. On mine, I plan to more extensively modify the lower front fuse to directly accept the landing gear.

Also be aware of reported stab failures, so some tail-bracing might be in order. Oh, I've flown the plane, and can tell you it's definitly worth the effort to build it right. The plane is a superb flyer - stable on all axis, yet maneuvers crisply on command.

If you modify the landing gear to attach to the fuse and remove the front center section of wing to clear the structure, you will greatly improve this model. The belly pan, in this case, could be permanently attached to the wing. Very nice set-up. Just modify the wing structure as req'd. My gear is attached to a beefed up plate with (4) 1/4-20 nylon bolts. I hope I don't put the wheels through the wing too many times.

BTW, that huge aluminum chunk of a gear strut is HEAVY. I may attempt to scratch build a fiberglass or carbon strut. He, He

The horizontal stab seems pretty sturdy to me. I guess with a hard enough snap maneuver...

How much does your friends Sukhoi weigh. Does it come in hot or float like the 10-300 does.

I also luv bipes and need an upcoming project. Have any recommendations.

Another kit you might want to consider is the Lanier Ultimate Pitts. It's an all-wood kit with many laser cut parts. The plane looks like a hybrid which uses a Pitts style fuse and Ultimate wings. RC Report's Dick Pettit reviewed it very favorably sometime in 1999 and reprints are available. FWIW, that I have it slated for next winter's project.

The recommended engine range is 1.08 2-stroke to 1.80 4-stroke (or small gasser). weight, depending on engine should come in betweeb 11 and 14 lbs.

At 10.5 lbs my friend's Sukoi is not a floater, but neither does it fall out of the sky. It's just a good-tracking, very solid flying type of plane. After flying his I became motivated to build mine sometime in the future.

I've attached a pic of my last Pitts (a Cermark 1/4 scale ARF S2B - great flyer, but lousy quality), which I flew for 2 seasons 'till I lost it in a midair at the end of last season.

I assume that you have the second revision of this plane which has the landing gear mounted to the fuselage. My plane had the gear mounted to the wing. I had a YS120 with the servos mounted in the tail. My CG was almost an inch rear of the recommended position and it did very tight axial rolls. The plane was too heavy to hang on the propeller but flew better than any plane I have had with the exception of my Giles with a 2.4 gas engine.
