Most older airplanes used a zinc chromate primer on the bare metal parts for corrosion protection. Depending upon the manufacturer, the color of the primer varied from a dark green to a lighter, yellowish green. I suspect that as long as the color you use has the label of something like "zinc chromate green" you will be in the ball park.

I recently visited a aircraft restorer in Colorado Springs in the process of restoring 5 P-38s of several different series to full flying capability. The P38G had a yellowish green primer the P38J had a darker green primer. The color depends on what the military specs were at the time of manufacture. As it was explained to me this particular shop researches each individual aircraft and restores it as built at the factory. For instance the P38G had a flaw that caused vibration that caused instability in a dive, the P38J had a modification to stop this. The P-38G was sometimes modified in the field to prevent this vibration. In the case of this restorer no modification will be made to the P-38G.

Google cockpits, you'll be surprised at the number of colors used, I sure was.
