1/4 scale BALSA J3 cub kit. Feelings about the need of any washout needed in the wings. I'm at that stage and there is some confusion about the washout needs. those of you that have built it and fly it should have some reliable answers.
Thank you.

Frank custom builds rings. Better seal than most OEM rings (less end gap, closer fit top to bottom) and the material he uses wears better than most OEM rings, so once they wear in, they last longer. Every engine I've tested ends up gaining approx. 15 PSI over OEM rings so engines start easier and idle lower and sometimes you get a higher top end too.

Absolutely NO need for washout in wings. The model is completely docile with flat wings, and is very difficult to spin, can be slowed to a crawl with no signs of anything other than a gentle wing drop at the stall. ! Mine had an OS 160 twin, new 1/3 Cub (OS Pegasus) also has flat wings.

s3nfo... I had a NGH 38 in my quarter scale DVII. The flying weight was about 20 lbs. The NGH was way under powered for the airframe. It flew the plane, but it was wide open the whole time, and looked like it was going to fall out of the sky at any moment. Now I am not bashing the NGH. I really liked mine, but had to pull it out and put in a Saito 2.20. Your motor with the upgrades might be better. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck.

Good to know Jeffee, thanks for the heads up. Think I'll try to keep it well under 20 lbs and give the GF-38 a shot anyway, really want that 4 stroke sound and don't do glow anymore. Fortunately I haven't started building it yet, so think I'll do the firewall so I can easily retrofit another engine if the GF-38 doesn't cut it. Thanks again for the heads up.

So far I've used the NGH 38cc FSG on airplanes weighing about 15 lbs. with good results. I think this is this engines range. It seems to be comparable with a G-26 as far as what it can handle. The BUSA DVII is a heavier and larger plane and although I feel the engine can handle it, you're not going to see the speed or performance you would get with a G-38. Also, I've seen these planes fly on G-26's and although they were slow, they still did fly! I thought my DVIII on a G-23 was going to fall out of the sky but it flew well. It also flew faster than the DVII with the G-26. The question is do you want to fly scale or do you want to do 3D with a WWI airplane?

I scratch built a 10' old time Quaker and with a Sach 2.4 (40cc) engine, the weight is 20#. It flies great on a 20x8 prop. Last
summer I put a NGH 38cc in it using a 20x8 prop and I did not feel comfortable with the rpms I was getting. I put a 19x8 on
and the plane flew very well. I broke the engine per instruction and the engine is easy starting and runs very well. I like the
4 stroke engines for the sound and this engine is right in there. Fuel mix I use is 32-1.
Thanks, Rick

I have the BUSA QS Fokker D VII and it is my second one. In both I run the Zenoah 38 with 20x8 master airscrew simatar prop. The G38 pulls my 22+ lbs. D VII very well and I fly a scale routine at just above 3/4 power. It will do a loop from level flight with full power. The NGH 38 may be good for the smaller WW I models under 15-16 pounds. I have the BUSA QS Pup with a very old Zenoah 23 that I may look at getting a NGH 38 to try it out.
My 2 cents

Gerry, I saw a guy hovering a 1/2 Pup at MAD. I did a loop around him with my QS DVIII. Everyone I know that's flying the QS DVII is using a G-38 or better. It's a very heavy, big plane. Foodstick, I would be very happy with a Pfaltz. Bruno Stachel, here I come!

Their D7 is such a great flier/looker that I feel guilty even thinking of building more planes.
However there is a part of me that wants one of each !!
I am still so fired up on my electric 1/4 N11, I finished it late last year..and its my camera plane for the times we get multiple WW1 1/4 scales up. So fun to fly, looks great, makes me want to start new kits
