Carl Goldberg Anniversary Cub
So I bought a Carl Goldberg Anniversary Cub Kit last week. I am hoping to use it to dust off some building skill rust before I restart my Top Flite Giant Scale P-47 project that has been put on hiatus since 2010. (Career change and two cross country moves). I hope to have it done when it is finished. Anyway the kit looks pretty good when you open the box, everything was there that was supposed to be.I took these pictures last week when I was inventorying everything. I finally got started today and ran into some minor problems, nothing too bad but I figured I would mention them. First the laser cut parts do not line up with the plans, about 3/16" to a 1/4" off. No biggie, I just built to the laser cut parts and made sure everything was symmetrical. I had to make a filler strip to go between the LE of the Stab and the laser cut stab center piece, just dug through my balsa lumber yard and with a little trimming, sanding, and measuring I was on my way, total detour about 20 minutes.
The next issue is a little more irksome. I think they were training a new employee on how to select wood for a kit. The laser cut parts for the stab come on two sheets, kind of like one for each side. One was really heavy and the other was really light, again no big deal I just did my best to balance out the heavy and light stuff, same story with the 1/8" by 1/4" strips for the trusses. Again I made a plan to balance out the heavy and the light. I feel that I am an experienced builder with over 10 years of building experience under my belt so this is not a problem for me as much as an iritant. I am sure a thread could be started on the virtues of proper wood selection and utilization while building. Sorry about the long post, but I am excited about building again and sharing my experiences.

The parts fit in these kits really suck now. The kits with the plans in black ink are the ones. The original
kits were in blue ink and not that so called laser cutting. Don't get me wrong I still love this plane, but you
have to do a lot of extra work to make everything fit right. The end result will be a good flying plane. Heres
the one I'm flying now with a Magnum 70 FS.

Alright!!!! Love this plane and subscribed. I have an old original CGAniv Cub picked up NIB. It's the die-cut version. Working an an old CG Eglet 50 and a Kadet SR first. I am using a Saito 65 on mine. I've also used a K&B Sportster 40 with full wing and flew great thanks to the light weight and a Sportster 65 on a clipped wing. Both fun... But really enjoyed the floater scale like flying on the full wing.
This one will be built full wing with an extra bay added on each side to get to 80".
OHHHhhhhhhh. Ordered the EFlight super cub 25e gear. It fits and is functional for $25. Worth every penny!!!

Yeah! Yearts ago I had a cg cup and couldn't justify. Paying like 100 for it from robart or another source that had them. When I found out the 25e gear would fit I ordered it. Its E-flight part number EFL460016 and now on sale for $17.49 at Horizon from the $23.99 paid.
I also ordered the veotex genetator strips off the new park zone super cub yesterday. No price yet because new. But ordered anyway a set for the eaglet 50 and the Anniv cub. It's part number PKZ6822.
This one I will either use the TRexler balloon wheels. Or the Dubro... In a size larger. The Trexlors are. On my carbon cub now to try out. They can take brutal terrain and look great. But, being latex, will see how they hold up long term.

Sorry about the lack of a post for a while, work and school have kept me busy the last week. I should be finishing up the tail section (empennage for you sophisticated types) this weekend. I hope to have some good pictures and some useful (maybe) insights to post.
Thunderboat, the Eaglet 50 is an awesome little plane. Years ago I had one with an O.S. 25 FP up front, it was just a fun cruise around airplane. I have never had a Sig Kadet Senior, but have built and flown a couple of Senorita's over the years, again great airplane even in three channel mode. I always used them as a change of pace airplane, sometimes I just don't feel like burning holes in the sky at plaid speed or doing aerobatics, I always try to have a trainer in my hangar for this reason.

Love the Eaglet... Was my first plane... Soloed in a weekend, no trim on maiden, flew it foralmost 30yrs with a K&B Sportster 20. Got crushed in a move .. So building a new one. Yep, a new Sportster going in it. Unfortunatelu the trim color of original is nolonger availabe. So not sure how I'm going to trim it out yet. Probably resembling a C 150 aerobat (that was my primary trainer yrs ago anlon w a Cherokee 140).

The CG Cub is a tough bird, especially the wing which will absorb any & all aerobatics. I flew mine on an OS 61 4-stroke. Good power, but I'd go with a .70-.72 if float flying.
I saw those (VG's, vortex generators) at the Toledo show in April, and the rep said $20 for a pair.

Compared to making them it's worth it I guess although I was anticipating ant $10.
I have an about to be freshened up Saito 65 for this one. Agreed a newer 72 would be better for floats but not buying a new engine. Too many projects. Of course I could use the 65 in the Kadet Sr. Hmmm.

I picked up a partly built CG Cub at a club auction 2 years ago, and finished building it in November. The original builder had built some elaborate droop tips, and wired it for lights. I chose instead to clip the wings down by 1 rib bay each side, and built my own tips. I then covered it all with red Solartex, installed one of my trusty PAW .40 diesels, and it came out to exactly 7 pounds ready to fly. I should be giving it a maiden flight pretty soon, can't wait!

Okay, I have finally made a little progress in my build. Not to make excuses but I am going to school full time and working about 3/4 time as a flight instructor. Prepping for finals week and a flight schedule that is starting to reflect some good weather has left building time at a premium. I managed to get the elevator built, no complaints went together pretty well I also got the rudder and the vertical fin put together. I ran into a problem with a gap in the vertical fin like I did on the horizontal stabilizer. I attribute this to the laser cut parts not perfectly matching the plans. I will again make a "shim" to fill the gap, no biggie. I just figured with laser cut parts I would not have to do a whole lot of fitting and trimming, but now I know for this kit even the laser cut parts will require slight adjustments. I will admit that I can be OCD on fit and quality of construction. My last final is tomorrow, so all I have to balance is work and family for the rest of summer. My goal is to get this plane flying before I start fall term September 30th.

Looking good there Eric. One thing I like to do is to join the elevator with a piece of music wire instead of that dowel. I use
a piece about the size of the landing gear wire. I started doing this a long time ago after I popped the second dowel.

You will find that on most of the Goldberg planes the plans can sometimes expand due to moisture. The parts will not and sometimes it won't be an exact match. You will probably see that in the wing and fuse construction as well. Just FYI so you don't work yourself unnecessarily trying to make something fit then to discover the parts don't mate up when you start joining assemblies.

Found an old kit too (blue ink with die cut sheets). Never saw dark plywood before (firewall and F2,F3). Anyway, adding WS so I can fly it at imaac field. How are you going to deal with setting the new dihedral? Also, what gas engine would you use ? Who 10 or 15? Thanks.
