Building a scale 1/4 scale Super Cub from Balsa J3 kit
#852
Well there is a lot of info. on the subject of the jury struts and I'm going to be using the brass tubes made oval. 3/8" looks to be big enough and it's easy to jump a size. Also the door handle is doable with an idea I have mixed with some others I have seen, I will post what I come up with.
On with the fun stuff, hinging the ailerons & flaps. First of all a good guide and layout is critical to a good job, I made the drilling jig out of a 2X2 cut on my band saw which cuts very nice and square, once its drilled for the guide it's hardened with thin CA, only other things needed is a 1/4" wide file and a 1/4" brad point bit which cuts cleaner than a standard bit in soft balsa. With the guide clamped on (center is found looking into guide hole) drill it, file the 4 sides and test fit a hinge butt then move to the next one and repeat.Fit is perfect and I mean perfect, hope to do as well on the others, movement is very smooth and there is plenty of travel on the flap. I really wanted to see it on the plane, I'm very happy the way it's coming out.

Very nice Leroy, the square hing posts look spot on ... the gap between the flap and false spare when the flap is fully extended, is temporary?

My biggest misunderstanding is why people will argue what is scale "don't look right". These Cub flaps is another perfect example of a dead scale build conceived as "don't look right". I get it all the time on my builds and it is most annoying.

You builders should know that there is an extension beyond the false spar top directly over the flap at the trailing edge of wing, it addresses that gap when the flap is full down. Mine will get that after the covering and the leading edge of flap will get a bit different contour before it's done.

I wasn't saying it was out of scale, I already commented on the appearance, it's an exceptional job well done!... the gap looked excessive, and I made a inquiry, it wasn't clear to me if he had set the gap up or if he had purposely pulled it away from the false spar to better show the hinges... just curious guys, I'm trying to keep in on topic and not wonder off in my own little world
The extension on the top side of the false spar explains it Leroy... I knew there was something more to it... the hinge detail is first rate, superior job mate!

Leroy, I have a feeling your idea of "as scale as reasonable" is more like "as scale as possible irregardless of what it takes", my kind of builder. A car company has an expression I like, "The pursuit of perfection", it is not perfection we enjoy for perfection is unattainable but rather the thrill of the pursuit.

You just have to take a look at his custom Spacewalker to know this, its the capital "P" in perfection... he certainly has the patients of a saint!
