I've seen the K&S stuff at the local ACE Hardware store. Can always try and ASK.
The Hobby Lobby craft stores carry it too.

And last but not least: Retailer List That Carry K&S

Hi Michael

Sounds like you've bought some Solartex off the roll. Solartex is very easy to use and not too sensitive to the temperature of the iron but the recommended temperatures according to the instruction sheet which came with my 2-metre roll of Solartex is to use an iron set to a temperature of 100C-120C when attaching the material to the airframe 130C-150C for shrinking. Otherwise you use Solartex like any film covering.

The manufacturers recommend that you use a fuel proofer inside the tank bay and engine bay allowing 24 hours for the fuel proofer to dry. Once you have covered the model they recommend a second coat in the tank and engine bay and over the edges of the covering.

You may find the following helpful. Personally I always start with the tips then the leading then the trailing edge. The modeller in the video does it the other way round.

For me, the Facebook groups are like a bite from a candy bar, tasty but it doesn't satisfy. I prefer the detail available in the forums.

Not only that, but there is no way to go back and find old posts like you can here. A lot of the members are a-holes too, set in their ways and try telling others that what they are doing is wrong.

I find that Facebook groups are too restrictive since you have to join Facebook just to get to see anything they have posted. I don't need or want to join any of the social media sites(Twitter, FB, etc) so I guess I won't get to see what balsa model aircraft builders association has to offer either

Not really missing much. I just use FB as a placeholder for pictures to post in forums. It's easier than finding the lightning cable for the iphone and plugging it in and hoping that it works so you can upload a picture. Instead, I tap the picture, tap upload, tap FB and post, then go to my page right click the image and copy the link to the forum and post it, then go back and delete it from FB. Free cloud storage.

Good Evening, Today I received a Great Planes Easy Sport 40 ARF from Tower Hobbies after pulling the darn thing out of the plastic bags I found that two of the ribs are damaged in the right wing panel. So I sent an email to them asking them to replace I hope to hear back soon from the as I was really hoping to be flying this airplane next week. Yes this is my first ARF in 30 years wow. The covering is on nice but is wrinkled all over and I have to reseal it with my Covering Iron and heat gun. We shall see I also going to liven it up a little by adding some additon trim on the bottom of the wing and Fuese too
Thanks
Michael Johnston

Default kits are gone

Most builders have gone to Viet Nam, etc....they build so many they are experts at it. ARF,s are less expensive than kits all things considered....but it does help to know how to modify ARFS to make them stronger at landing gear area, firewall...etc.

ARFs just don't give me the same sense of accomplishment as building does so I'll keep building.

Arf are OK for a quick in the air plane, but can't satisfy the need for a true scale warbird build. They can be used as the building block to a good scale one though.

Hi don't they let people compete with ARF's in Scale events? I just picked up a EasySport from GP and I looked how cheap this kit is and I dont see how anyone made any money on it what so ever! Michael

I like them all. ARF's, kits, glow, gas, electric. My philosophy is do what you want to do. It's all fun. I'm currently finishing upgrades/fixes to a Great Planes Giant Super Sporster and I'm having a blast. I've flown it before, it flies "great".

Herewith a series of stills taken at La Coupe Des Barons on 2nd June this year. Sixty-eight models turned up on the day, nearly all having been built by their entrants. ARTFs were allowed but they had to have their ailerons disconnected and taped up. The competition is only for three-channel models. Your humble servant's entry, Boris, No. 247, is the first model featured, wrinkled covering and all.

I really don't care for them and I am a builder and with the demise of hobbico there are no kits left at tower! My philosophy is if I didn't build it from the ground up its not worth it to me!
It just was to cheap to pass up and I already had the radio and engine for this kit. The hardware was really junk grade including the fuel tank which I didn't use!
Thank You
Michael

All of this poses the question, why does my local Hobbytown dedicate so much space for plastic models?
As a small boy, I started out building static model cars. Then, as a young adult, someone offered to help me enter the wonderful world of model aviation. That was nearly 40 years ago and I've never looked back!
Always something on the board.

I wondered about that too. Except for a few Gullows and some rockets that is ll Hobby Lobby carries as well. And yet when I spoke with a LHS in a town in the northern part of the sate who had a bunch in stock he told me he can't sell his existing stock of plastic models. About all they do is take of space and gather dust. I remember when I was a kid in the mid sixties I bought plastic models from him but then I moved to Denver and discovered powered models. I started with C/L and then went to R/C. The only plastic models I have bough since that time was gifts to the grandsons and then I helped them put the models together.

The last plastic model I bought was a 1/48 Tamiya kit of the de Havilland Mosquito. I was going to use it for documentation of an 84" version from Bob Holman plans. Unfortunately, I never got around to building the darn thing. As a kit builder, I was dismayed to find there were no building notes whatsoever. That was back in the '80's.
Maybe some day I'll build the Tamiya kit (yes, I kept it all these years), you know, just for giggles.
FYI, I have Horizon Hobbies on another tab. They show Ultracote (my personal favorite) Midwest wood, Dubro hardware, Robart hinge points, etc. There's some 14 pages of name-brand stuff. So, that's a good thing, right?
