I'm curious if putting flaps on a GP RV-4 would be worth the while. My radio supports them and I have some spare servos I could use, I'm just curious if it will effect flying performance, etc etc.

I know only of a couple planes with flaps at our field. I think that they are pretty much a waste. Only really for steep landings. Some fields do require this because of their layout (trees).

Well, it is true that in most situations model planes do not need flaps. IMHO they are worth while if you are the sort of person who likes bells and whisles. I have had flaps before. They were not necissary, but they were fun.

If you really think about it, spending a big chunk of disposible income on toy airplanes is a waste.

I just finished my RV-4. I put flaps on mine after talking to another RV owner at my field who had not put flaps on and wished he had.
I have done flapless landings and landings with flaps. They are not 100% necessary but who cares. They look cool as hell.
Having flaps does make it easier to get speed down for landing.

Given a choice, I will always add them.

If the plane is designed without them... I just might add them anyway.

Notice how the only people telling you not to put flaps on don't make mention of having flown the plane?

I own one and I put flaps on it. I don't always use them for take off, but they help slow the model down for landing. With the flaps on it lands as easily as any trainer, but in flight with the flaps retracted this thing goes like heck. I suggest putting the flaps on.

Regarding flaps; if you don't want to include flaps, why not?

Granted, you don't need them, but they are fun and add to the hobby. If you choose not to use them, fine. If you want to they're available. I've had so much fun with a "Contender" with flaps it influenced my decision to buy the "RV-4". When I get around to building it, you can be sure I will be adding flaps.
