Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10-300
I have the opportunity to buy one of the CG Ultimate 10-300 kits.
What is the opinion of this kit, I see it has been discontinued.
What about quality, flying characteristics?
What would be a good engine for it?

Its a very good airplane. The kit is easy to build. If you plan on building it you should get the book from Harry Higgley on Bipes. He shows several ways to improve on the kit. Not really needed because the kit is good, but the Higley book just makes it a little stronger.
The kit was designed by Dave Patrick and the Ultimate he sells today is basicly the same thing.
As for power. The ST 90 is a good 2-stroke, or any 4-stroke 120 would work. I like both the OS and Saito.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips Tony,
It's interesting - I had been told the kit had been discontinued, yet Tower show them in stock.
Anyone know what the real story is here?

Goldberg is no longer in business. The kits that Tower show as in stock are being kitted by Lennier. I have no idea if they have been changed.
If you have a chance to get one of the old Goldberg kits, then this is a good kit.
Lennier may be a good kit, but I have not seen one. I built one of the Goldberg kits and it makes a great plane.

RE: Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10-300
It is an excellent kit. I builty one back in 91-92. It was my first bipe and my 3rd kit I think. I put a 60 in it and it flew well. I am currently fixing it up (minor repairs due to age and recovering) and replacing the 60 with a ST 90.
If it is the CG kit, I would definitely replace the wire gear with an aluminum set, make sure you reinforce the area where the gear attaches as well. You might also look to replace the cowl with a one peice fiberglass one as well, though the kit cowl is fine if you take your time and make sure you glass the inside of the joints. Keep in mind, these are not necessary. They are just some improvements that can make it a better plane than it already is.

A buddy of mine got 2 of these kits and I recieved one for building his. They were both built with YS 120's and dual servos in the wings. Great flying planes. His was covered in the stock picture on box and mine was done a little different.
Iam going to replace the landing gear, I don't like the wire gear.

RE: Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10-300
The Goldberg Ultimate is an absolute pleasure to fly. I have one, currently receiving some repairs and recovering. I traded a Sig Kougar even up for mine, both already built, covered and engined. I thought I got the better deal, but he liked Kougars!
An ST90 does indeed power it nicely, even though mine was fairly heavy thanks to cloth covering. Also consider glassing the leading edge sheeting of the bottom wing. I will be doing that as part of my repairs. A hard landing can put a wheel into the sheeting, or worse into one of the basswood spars. Its also pretty easy to crack the sheeting with your thumbs when assembling the model for flying. The wire gear is not the best. They include wire gear with both their Ultimate and Extra (which I also have) and frankly its the only thing about them that I dislike. TnT makes dural blanks for both and I would strongly recommend the extra expense. Fiberglass cowls are nice too, but not a necessity.

RE: Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10-300
I just checked Carl Goldberg Ltd at http://www.carlgoldbergproducts.com/ultimate.htm and they indicate they are still selling the 10-300 kit. I have built and am flying two of them, one with a Saito 1.20 and one with a Saito 1.50 and I love both of them.

RE: Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10-300
I did win that Ultimate on eBay. Look very much forward to seeing the kit.
Unfortunately, it will be sitting on the shelf for a while because of my other projects.
These are:
33% Super Decathlon from Wendell Hostetler
1/5 Pepsi Chipmunk from Apache Aviation
Miss Texas from Chuck Cunningham plans
Maybe I should start finishing a project before starting another one

RE: Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10-300
I have a Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10-300, with a Super Tigre 23cc motor. I built the plane in the mid 1990s and have lost the instructions and plans. I want to fly it again.
Can someone please post the CofG and control throws. I remember that they were in degrees.[sm=confused.gif]

Did anyone not like the wing attachments. I am currently building one and they seem a little weak to me. I'm going to put in a .78MDS that I'm now breaking in. Kit is going well, but would like some feedback on wing fasteners before going further.
Thanks, red

RE: Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10-300
These are control throws from the kit.
gentle aerobatic
ail 10% 12%
elv 12% 14%
rud 15% 23%
Initial flights should be made with the gentle settings at the hi rate and the lo rate at 75% of gentle settings. Once model is trimmed out you can increase the control throws.
Kit also suggests 6% mix as follows.
left rudder------right ail
right rudder-----left ail
No pitch mix suggested
Still would like feedback as to wing fastening. I feel it is too weak as shown.
good luck, red

RE: Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10-300
Thank you Coralcape, much appreciated.
I flew the plane quite a bit about 8 years ago. I lived in the UK then. It is overpowered with a Super Tigre 23cc. The wing attachment is just fine. I expect you are concerned about the single wire for the top wing. Its plenty strong enough, the biggest problem is inserting it. It either goes first time or 5 minutes later!! The up and down support comes from the wire. Any imbalance is transmitted through the interplane struts to the bottom wing. It work fine

RE: Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10-300
Just maidened this one 2 weeks ago, flies like a dream ! Got the kit for christmas and put it together over 3 months. It was my first kit build and I was so paranoid over making sure all the incidences and angles were correct. Needed 2 clicks of left aeliron trim and that was it !

They fly great with a 90 2 stroke. An OS 1.08 would probably be devine.

When I got mine...way back in the 1990s in the UK....I bought a fiberglass cowl and spats and threw away the ABS junk, right from the get-go. I don't know how manufacturers have the gaul to supply ABS, especially on expensive models
