I cracked the aft turtle cover, can it be fixed, it's such light ply and it cracked right in front of the rear wing. Now what??

happened on my CG extra I just thin CAed it and then did the wrap around but it took extra work to get the CAed area to shape. if its too bad you can get the thin ply at the LHS
or is it ABS?
or is it ABS?

That's all such good advice the only thing I can add is the most obvious... make sure you have a perfectly flat building board! - and good luck with the build, Sukhois are a really beautiful plane

I was going to put dual servo's in the tail for the elevator, as there isn't enough room to put the across from each other , and i don't want to have to cough up the dough for slim servo's, is there any reason I can't install them vertically instead of horizontally like the suggest?

If you aren't trying to mount the servos in the back due to W/B reasons, You can get a nice High Torque Servo up front with a nice stiff Carbon Fiber rod going aft to a Dual output device (I can't remember what it is called). It mounts inside the Fuse that has one connection for a Clevis to a shaft that sits through the aft part of the Fuse with 2 outputs, One for each Elevator half. Your connection from the Servo to this Device would be long but then depending on where you hide this thing your connections to the Elevators will be only inches, and they are exactly the same distance on either side of the fuse.
I haven't been able to find this thing on the web......I know it's out there. My LHS has them and with the ball berings in it your won't loose Servo Torque from control linkage friction.

I also have the Sukhoi kit. I started it 2 years ago and finished the wing first. I will post a picture later. I have information on the part you are looking for. It is from made by MK and you can get it from Central Hobbies. The link follows: [link=http://www.centralhobbies.com/control_linkage/Bellcrnk.html]Bellcrank Assembly[/link]
I have a Saito 150 NIB waiting for me to finish the kit. I hope to resume building this winter and complete it this year.
More to follow....

Awesome! I'm really glad to see a surge in the interest level of this kit. I've had one waiting to be built for almost 10 years and am finally getting to see a time when I'll actually start on this beauty. I'm about half finished with a Somethin' Extra and the Sukhoi is next in line. I have a friend with a Saito 150 and am anxious to see it fly. I'm planning on using one as well.

I just put together an old CG Sukhoi. It had the gear attached to the wing. I am putting a ST2300 in it and decided to go with 2 high torques mounted in the rear for the elevator halves. I cut rectangle holes where the outlet of the pushrods for the elevator are. I didn't put them across from each other as they wouldn't fit. But I put one on the top part of the fuse on one side and on the other side right directly below the servo on the opposite side. This way you don't have to get a servo reverser Y. They will have the same length pushrod and the each elevator half will move the same.
Here is a pic of what i'm trying to explain. It is in paint and i'm not a great artist but bear with me. The dotted line represents the cuttout on the opposite side.

Good idea Silvia, so does one servo arm point up and the other down, and do the control rods run parrallel with the wing ? I know the system you are talking about Alfred it's this http://www.centralhobbies.com/contro...age/deps1.html , but as I'm going with the saito 1.80 I think I'm going to need the weight in the tail.

I am on my second CG Sukhoi build - you can put the elevator servos horizontal or vertical in the back of the fuselage - I am doing mine again like the book shows, horizontal. Use some of the scrap turtledeck plywood to reinforce the area around the servos. My first one balanced with no extra weight - with a YS 120 AC up front. While I didn't do 3D with my first one, I should be able to with this one - I am making sure that I have enough throws on the control surfaces and big enough servos to move them. I have to cut the elevator halves to allow for more rudder - I am also adding weight to counterbalance the elevator halves. This one will have the same YS in it, if it isn't enough power, then I will put a YS 140 DZ in it. I sure hope they fixed all the mistakes they had in the early - new and redesigned kit - given all that I have had to fix on this one, I will not buy Carl Goldberg again - and that is after buying many of their kits. If anyone has questions about anyting specific, let me know and I can post pictures.

Yeah. If looking at the pic that I drew. The hidden servo on the back side (top one) the arm would be down and the one on the front side would have the arm pointing up. I just cut rectangle holes to match my servos and put 1/4sq. basswood on the inside of the fuse where the screws would go for the servos.
I have the same setup on a 23% Edge. Works great, no servo reverser Y and no mismatched control throw.

TnT3, Would you mind posting a pic of the bottom of the fuse in the area of the gear mount and wing saddle?
I've got an older kit with the wing mounted gear and want to build it with the newer gear mount.
(When you get there, I'd also be interested in a shot of the wing center in the same area...)
Thanks,
Ross

I just completed my Goldberg Sukhoi. I have a Saito 150 in mine. I used two servos in the tail for the elevator, and one servo in the tail for the rudder. There is plenty of room for the three servos. I did reinforce the fuselage around the servos and tail feathers with triangle stock. With that set up the model balanced 4 and 7/8 inches from the leading edge with the battery pack in the area of the landing gear.

Well, I have the main part of the build done, gonna start sanding things down getting ready to cover and install components. On the main wing there is balsa sheeting around the servo, i test fitted a servo and i noticed i have no room to get at the mounting screws. Do i cut the balsa to allow for a screwdriver or do i use bolts and nuts to install from the reverse side?

Not sure about how much room you have to deal with but I use the small Allen head screws for my hatches and Servos, It allows you to get them installed with a ball driver allen told which gives you some leeway about what angle you're at.
That Bellcrank assembly from Central is the part I was thinking about. Not bad for $30 considering it allows for a clean set up and has abll bearings in it.

Trim just a little wood away to allow you to put the screws in.NO biggy
I just put my servos in last night and it was a tight fit also.
In the process of rebuilding a 13 yr old Sukhoi, that went in 2 yrs ago ,mostly wing damage that a new wing kit fixed up.I cant even imagine the number of flights on this plane.but its one of the best flying Airplanes around .I did have a 160 OS in it .but I now have a 2300 ST. The 160 is in another GB Sukhoi.
As soon as the snow clears some and I get a muffler I'll let folks know how the 2300 compairs to the 160.
BTW from the pics your doing a great job keep up the good work .

I built this kit when it first came out. Best plane I ever had. Used a an OS 108 with 30% nitro. I used the stock plastic parts and laminated fiberglass to the inside. I flew the heck out of it, full bore snaps out of a dive.. used to scare the other guys because the covering would hum like a drum.. lol... sold it still in tact, wish I did not, lol.. If I recall correctly, I covered it in 21st fabric...
You will love this plane... build it strong and wring it out
Regards,
Randy

I wound up buying a Sukhoi from a guy at my field yesterday. Spent last night installing my receiver and battery adn going thru the engine, flew today. What a great flying airplane! I really couldn't make it stall, it just mushed along, alieron usage resulted in a VERY gentle snap and spin. Not terribly fast with a Saito 120, but it's plenty of power. What a great, well mannered airplane. I still have some issues to address, (standard servos all around, needs recovered, etc etc) but I think this one's gonna bea keeper. Now all I need is a bigger car to haul it to the field in...

I know this may be a little late, I strongly recomend that you re-enforce the main gear mouning block. I built one about two years ago, lost my gear on the first deadstick landing. I tied it into all the ribs I could find with blocking and epoxy.
My Sukoi now has around 40 hours of flight time on it.............. You'll love it.
Best regards
