Default Water transfer decals...

I'm finishing up a Balsa USA Eindecker covered with solartex. After applying the decals they recommend a topcoat of clear polyurethane. I tried a test piece with water based polycrylic satin but dont like the way it looks on the decal. Are water transfer decals fuel proof or can this step be omitted? Any suggestions? Thanks
