Top Flight P-47D gold covering
Hi everyone,
I'm about ready to finish my P-47D (60-120 size). It says to use monokote, but I'm wanting to paint it. My question is should I glass it to paint or would I be better off using a monochromatic covering then using fuel proof spray paint to get the scheme I want. I've never done glass before and have read alot about it. Seems like this might not be the aircraft to start glassing with. Any help would be most graciously accepted. Thanks.

I have one in Monokote and one that is glassed with rivet and panel line detail. Both fly great but I like the glassed one better because of the detail. It to was my 1st glassing job. A few things to remember- to blot all extra resin (especially puddles)with toilet paper, it will make shinny spots in the paint, and soak up any extra that might build up around the edges, to hard to sand off when it cures. Use only enough resin to stick the cloth to the frame, and fill the weave with primer. I don't like polyurethane either, it's brittle as heck and makes cracks besides, Zap finishing resin has been used for years, and it sands great, be hard to find something better. Good luck and don't be afraid to try it!

Thank you very much for your input. I was leaning toward glass and I think you pushed me over the edge. I'll keep your "tech tips" in mind while working on it. One last question though, what type or brand primer do you think works best, and what weight glass should I use?

I used 3/4 oz. cloth with Krylon primer and paint with Nelsons clear coat on top of that. If I had it to do over again, I would still glass but not use Nelsons clear or Krylon, I would consider Nelsons paint.

Thanks for the help. I'll be glass'in. I'm a little confused about your last post, are you saying that you will do the whole plane in Nelson paint? Or stay away from both Nelson and Krylon? I take it that Krylon is not fuel proof and that is why you used the Nelson clear right?

There is another option to glassing. And that option is silkspan. Use Nitrate dope 50-50 mix for two coats then apply the silkspan with 50-50 nitrate. You will need a couple of coats depending on the weight of the silkspan used. Then use whatever primer or topcoat you plan to use over it. Just another option for what it's worth.

powertoys-
Your right, the Krylon is not fuel proof, some people say it is but in all of my test with 20-20 Wildcat, it's not even close, that is the reason for the Nelson clear. I would probably just use the regular Nelson paint for the entire finish next time.

I've heard about the dope and silkspan. Is it true that it adds more weight than glassing? And is it as tough as glass? I've got a three year old that just can not keep his hands off of the planes and has already put holes in my wings covered in monokote and worldtex. Thanks for the input, I'm always ready to do something different.
