GP 300 extra .60 Reinforcing sheeting
Hello all, I am just about complete with the wing. The section of the wing just behind the 1/4" dowels (pins) that would hook the front of the wing onto the fuse. The sheeting on both side where they join at the center of the two wing halves is so weak, that every time I touch it I think my finger will go right into it. Has anyone experienced that also and if so, did any one reinforce that area and what methods did you use. Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Pat

There's nothing much you can do but either totally remove the sheeting from the center rib to the first one, or be really, really careful. The wing is constructed so strong that it doesn't really matter if that sheeting is missing or not.

PDF:
This is to show you how strong the wing center section is on the GP Extra 300 .60.
It was built per plans and I too had doubts about strength. BTY it broke right at the end of the diehiedral braces.
Coming in for a landing I overcorected and snap/stalled the left wing into the ground. Also there was no damage to wing tip area

Thanks for the reply, I see that it serves no purpose for strenght. But I just would hate to hear it crunch when handling the wing. I may opening that section back up and glue another piece of balsa under the joints for a little rigidness.
Thanks again,
Pat

You could certainly do that, and if you're in the habit of grabbing the wing there, you may want to.
Or, you could just try to curb your habits and keep in mind that that is a weak area. I mean, you wouldn't pick a baby up by its head (Well, most people wouldn't). This is why on Full Scale planes they have "No Step" stenciled on certain areas. It's too weak to step on.
Of course, they COULD add reinforcement under the area.
