Default Old Carl Goldberg Sukhoi?'s

Hey. I just bought a CG Sukhoi off of ebay. It is the old kit with the landing gear on the wings and has the plastic crap for cowl and belly pan. I have 3 questions.

1. How did you guys beef up the wing area for the landing gear? Or how do you move it to the Fuse? What would be the easiest and best way?

2. Can I use the plastic "junk" for a mold to make my own fiber glass parts. Can i just drape cloth over it and epoxy? Or do I need to make a mold? And how would I go about making a mold?

3. I would like to glass this model also instead of using monocoat. I want a nice smooth finish and then want to paint it. Has anyone done this on this model? I plan on building it light so I can afford to add some weight on glassing it. I understand if your careful and squeegee out most of the epoxy, it is just as light as monocoat.

I have a ST 2300 sitting here that will be the power plant. It should have plenty of get up. Hopefully do a little 3D

Any Input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks............Brent

Hello Brent; I built one of the first ones that came out, I got as far as when I had to attach the gear to the wing and stopped there. I could see that every time I tried to land on our rough grass field I would break the wing. I covered teh plane and didn't get any farther on it. Eventually I bought a fiberglass cowl and belly pan for it, but by then I had moved on to other planes and even though it looks great, I haven't done any more to it.

I had intended to beef up the area in front of the wing with 1/4 ply and bolt the gear there but, it is so long it would look goofy. I think I will use an Extra 300 landing gear if I can find one. I have only seen one other GB Suhkoi in the air, beautiful plane, the builder did a great covering job on it. Then he broke the wing landing it and just about cried to see all his hard work destroyed. He hasn't repaired it since then either, too painful.

Brent, I Am Presently Flying A Goldberg Suhkoi. Great Flyer. No Problem With Landing Gear In The Wing. The Only Thing That Didnt Hold Up Was The Cowl. Had To Replace It With A Fiberglass One. I Use A 2 Stroke 90 And Fly Off Of Grass.

You can purchase an after market belly pan and cowl for the Sukhoi so that can solve your problem. As for glassing it, you would have to be careful not to make it too heavy, though it is possible to do. I'm not sure if a resin vs epoxy would be a better choice.

For the wing, you can modify the build to put the wheels on the fuse. The new design is the same wing with an indent and re-enforcement in the middle of the wing. The area where your dowel currently connects to the fuse, is extended to build a box for the landing gear.

This design has the wing wrapping around the fuse at the leading edge.

I don't think I would glass that one. There is no solid sheeting on that plane to glass. After you add sheeting there is no way to keep it as light as monocote.

Hi i've built 3 of these planes two of the old style and one new style .The gear in the wing was a big prob for most including myself .I finally was ready to toss in the towel and junk the plane even though it was such a great flying bird.I threw it in the corner untill one day I was looking at my extra and the way the gear was attached to the fuse ,The lights come on.It took a little work and some wood but when I was done the gear was on the fuse, back in the original place as before and never was torn out again that was 12 years ago .and it flew as good as ever untill a radio glitch shot the plane down .Thus thats why the new one .The wing is completly different on the new plane it even builds different ,which could make it better for slow speeds.as far as glassing the plane ??? there a fairly heavy bird to start with 10-13 Lbs depending on which engine you choose radio gear ETC and again the older ones dont like to be slowed down to much as they will drop a wing and they dont care which one so keep it as lite as possible .If you would like in detail how I changed the gear please feel free to contact me through email and i'll be glad to help all I can .Oh one more thing Stans Fibertech has the cowls and belly pan for this plane great stuff stans No.1 in my book.
