SE questions or opinions
I'm building the SE at the moment.
Have questions for SE owners.
Is the fuselage going to hold up ?
I'm surprized that it's only blasa.
I'm thinking it might be a problem in not so perfect landings.
I keep picturing the gears being ripped and fratures or cracks will delovope
at the aft section of the fuse.
I don't want to add wieght of course, but I don't think it's going to last.
Or maybe I shouldn't worry about it.
Thats why I'm asking.
Do you think it's a good idea if I leave out the wires for the tail
stabilizers ? I don't really want to put it on , but you all think its there
becuase the way the tail, ailerons, piece are glued or put together.
Dose this plane has any bad tendencies I should look for.
Or any modifications you guy done to make it fly different or better.
thanks

RE: SE questions or opinions
First the SE is a great flying airplane. The fuse will hold up fine. I stalled mine on landing about a foot and a half off the deck and no damage occured. If you are worried about the landing gear use nylon bolts for them instead of metal ones. I do that and that way my gear just shears off instead of breaking the block. A few things to watch out for. One is that it will fly slow to a point then it will drop like a brick. Come in with some speed for landings. Also I have been told but never experienced it that if it's put into a dive and gains too much speed it will mush and could pancake into the ground if you are not careful. Maybe someone else can say for sure.

Cornstalk at the end of the runway... was going too fast. No damage. I was sick when I heard it hit. I expected a broken wing or ripped off LE, but there was no damage.
Great flyer.

RE: SE questions or opinions
The SE will stand up OK to normal flying, including the occasional heavy landing. I did manage to rip of the landing gear plate on mine once as a result of an inauspicious landing, I just epoxied it back.
Like all models, if you crash it heavily enough it will break. There seems to be something about the SE that makes you want to push your luck, which is why many of us are on their second or third SE (you just have to build another!).
Insofar as the tail bracing is concerned the instructions are quite clear, omit at your peril! Maybe someone has tried leaving them out, if not you may choose to be the test pilot
My recommendation would be to build as per instructions and just enjoy flying. Chances are you will end up building another, so you will be able to experiment then.

RE: SE questions or opinions
thanks,
I was pushing my luck on me modified 4* 40 last weekend
I hit the deck doing low a loop.lol , but nothing happened to it.
It made some dust, bounded back in the air and kept flying
Got the verticle fin as low as a foot of the ground all day long.
Lost it on my last flight of the day as always.lol
Funni, it's always the last flight.
No amount of glue will trun that bird into a phoenix.
How did you know that ?...I'm thinking about build another already
Got the kit this weekend for som'in to get me back in the air fast,
I'm almost done with it. Probably going the do the fuse tonight and
on to the covering. I can't wait to push me luck.

RE: SE questions or opinions
I have built several of these planes and there are a couple of things I did change but you don't need to.
1. Switched the top stringer on the turtle deck from balsa to hard wood. this keps the covering from sagging the stringer whe you shrink the covering.
2. I enlarged the rudder and elevator for better 3-d Added about an inch to the bottom of the rudder and took about 3/8" off the top and that go rid of some of the coupling in knife edge.
3. and my latest change (not quite proven yet)is I put the rudder and elevator servo one behind the other and made it a pull-pull setup so I could get extreme throw.
as i said you don't need to do even one of these thing cause it is a great plane the way it is.

RE: SE questions or opinions
I have crashed my SE a few times 1) damage to LE 2) ripped LG out after Pancaking it in from about 3 - 4 feet up 3) all other times no noticeable damage. The only mods that I did was placing the alignment dowel into the wing instead of the fuselage. I saw one of our club members SE left wing rotated up on take off fortunately it came down in 1 piece and the cause for the mishap was that the wing was sitting on top of the dowel. You will enjoy the SE very much and if you are like the rest of us, you will even push your luck with the SE so enjoy it to the max and many happy flights.

RE: SE questions or opinions
The fuse is strong the wires are needed. Do a search and you will find many people recommend adding an inch to the rudder for knife edge. Having built two the biggest improvements came when I made taller gear so I could swing a bigger prop with low pitch and moved the CG well behind the recommended range.
