Default Socks over shoe

I cover my sealing iron shoe with a sock before using it to prevent scratches on the film. I use this setup to tack down corners and edges. Will it be better to do away with the sock for tacking jobs since the heat transfer is better ? Hope to get some opinions on this. Thanks................
