Newbie Question: What is a "Short" kit?
Hello, all. I've been browsing through some of the for-sale listings, and frequently come across ads for airplane kits described as "Short Kits". What does this mean? And if I bought two kits for a given aircraft, one being a "Short" kit, and the other being the regular kit, what would the difference be?
Thanks in advance for your explanations on this. I'm sure it's something simple, but haven't bothered to ask any of the members in my club. That would be waaay to easy.
Have a great one!

RE: Newbie Question: What is a "Short" kit?
A 'short kit' comes with plans and very little wood.
I think they usually include wing ribs and little else.
The advantage is you get to hand pick your wood for full control of your build.
The disadvantage is that you have to cut and shape nearly all of the parts.

ND,
Generally, short kits provide you with pre-cut wing ribs, fuselage formers and a few other parts. You supply the strip wood, sheeting and leading & trailing edges. They're a good deal, especially for those finicky types who constantly whine about the "quality of the wood" in kits.
Watch out, though. You DON'T always get a plan. You may have to buy the plan seperately. It pays to check with the manufacturer before you place an order. Then you'll be sure of what you're getting and what you'll have to provide. Good luck.

RE: Newbie Question: What is a "Short" kit?
Short kits can be either as stated above, the cut wood parts of a plan design, or sometimes a short kit will be the plans, and moulded parts such as cowl, canopy & scale doo-da. Seems there is no standard short kit. If you do not have a lot of experience, you should be sure to ask the seller exactly what is included.

Carrell, Paper, and Terry,
Great information! Thanks for the explanation, as it wound up being something completely different from my original guess. I certainly appreciate it!
