Great Planes p-51 Pitts Muffler question
I Recently started on a GP P-51 Mustang and last night bought a SuperTigre GS-51 for it . My Question is the cowl is very small so what brand/type of Pitss Mufflers will fit inside the cowl. The Plans and instruction book show a Tatone strap on pitts muffler. but would rather use a bolt on if I can help it.

Daryl,
I just saw your post from April while doing an RCU search for "Great Planes P-51". I just finished mine and plan to maiden it tomorrow -- weather permitting.
I had the same trouble you did... my G51 wouldn't fit under the cowl with a Bisson Pitts muffler. I said the heck with it and used a ST swing muffler. It's one of the older, teardrop-shaped ones, not one of the new huge ugly ones.
I just found a Slimline Pitts in the shop that looks like it might have fit in the cowl. I do have a spare cowl so I'll check it out some time when I have the cowl off.
Is yours finished? How's it fly?
Good flying,

RE: Great Planes p-51 Pitts Muffler question
Not done yet but its getting close. Just have to finish the covering. I actually build pretty fast but I have had long stretches where I did not have a chance to work on it. I am using a slimline pitts muffler made for the ST .40-.51 engines it fits but I had to hack the RH and bottom of the cowl a lot to make room for it. Here are some pics that I have made along the way. Good luck with the maiden and let us know how it flies and post some pics if you have them.

Here's mine. I've got about 20 hours of flying on her.

Very nice job!
I've been flying mine for a couple of days now. I have it on the workbench right now. I'm changing my engine mount from inverted to horizontal; I didn't like the way the inverted Super Tigre G51 ran with the carb spraybar even with the bottom of the fuel tank. I have a spare cowl and a Slimline Pitts muffler that fits (The Bisson Pitts muffler I have is much longer and would require cutting both sides of the cowl to fit).

RE: Great Planes p-51 Pitts Muffler question
Have a ST 40 in mine with a Slimline pitts muffler. Had to extend the cylinder head cutout a little to accomodate the muffler but it doesn't detract much and is a great flying machine. I also installed B & D 60 size mechanical retracts. Have around 100 flights on it.
