Default Mods to Great Planes Extra 300 .40 kit?

Hey guys,

Has anyone here modified their .40-size extra 300 from Great Planes? Mods such as increased elevator, rudder, or even aileron size? I intend to equip one with a Saito .91 (comparable in weight to the recommended O.S. 70), but much more powerful for...perhaps...3-D?

I'd like to hear anyone's experiences. I realize that it is a great plane stock, but I am looking for enhanced performance.

Thanks!

If it's 3-d you're looking for, you'll have to increase the size of all of the controll surfaces.

In my opinion, if 3-D is what you want, switch to a different plane. The 40 size Extra is an excellent kit as is. I wouldn't go overboard modifying it

Thats what I was thinking, if you want to fly like that buy a Funtana or something.

I've got one, 3-D it will not.

It does fly like it's on rails, if your into scale type aerobatics.

My GP Extra 300s .40 is a great flying Plane built stock from Kit. This Plane is not meant to be a 3D machine, and butchering up a Great Flying Plane like this to try and make it perform like a Funtana would really be a waste of a great kit in my opinion. The only thing I really changed on mine was I used the Sullivan Tail Wheel assembly instead of the stock one, and I braced my Tail Section with Guide Wires. I Plane flies very scale-like with the 52 Magnum 4 stroke I have on mine. A buddy on mine has the same Plane with a Saito 72, and that really seems like Plenty for this Plane. Just my .02 cents.

My Great Planes Extra 300s .40 size built from kit fall of 2004. Its covered in Ultrakote, powered with a 52 Magnum 4 stroke, and equipped with Futaba Radio gear. It has about 25 flights on it at the time of this post.

Hey guys,

Thank you for your opinions. If I do decide to purchase this kit, I will heed your suggestions and build per the plans.

Barracudahockey,a Funtana would be great, but I am looking to build, and I only know of ARFs for this plane.

Thanks again!

GP's Cap will do more 3D than the extra but it needs larger airlerons and weigh 5.5 pounds or less. Similar building style, the wing is practically indentical to the extra but with more dihedral.

Your right Tom. I have the Great Planes Extra 300 and the Great Planes Cap 232, both built from great easy building kits, and the Cap is indeed a more aggressive Plane and actually builds much lighter than the Great Planes Matt Chapman ARF Version. My Cap came in at a full 1 lb lighter than my extra. My Cap weighs 5lbs 6 ozs dry.
