Great Planes Giles 202 46
I just ordered this plane and am trying to figure out what motor I should buy. I don't have a lot of cash to blow on it, and I'm looking to get the best performance out of it. I've read all of the threads on this particular plane and as always, there's always a "ford and chevy" to any choice you make in this hobby.
so far, I've looked at:
O.S 61FX which supposedly doesn't deliver enough power (anything smaller is out of question)
Tower Hobbies .75 -apparently it's crap
*O.S 91FX- weighs less, costs less, and can swing a bigger prop than any other option I've checked out, any inputs? is it too large?
The only 4 stroke i guess i could stretch my budget to buy, is the Magnum XL 91 4 stroke. i've heard that it weighs too much for this plane and it is also junk.
any other suggestions? thanks
Rick M.

I don't know where you are getting your engine evaluations from but I have a Tower 75 and it is one sweet engine. I also have a Magnum 91 which is in my Giles 46 and it is just fine. I think it makes a great combination for the Giles. The Giles is a great flying airplane and deserves enough power to make it shine.
There are several great threads in the kit building section on this plane but just to remind you it will snap viciously with too much elevator.

I agree with Stripes, where are you getting your engine info from? A guy at my field has TWO magnum .91 four strokes in his giant scale p-38 and has the Tower .75 in his F-14. The P 38 flies awesome and the f-14 is a screamer. Everybody comes down to watch him fly. The Tower .75 gets stronger every time we tach it. I think he's swinging a 14x7 on the Tower and it tached out at 12,500 of 12,700 the last time we checked it. You just have to brerak in the Tower motor.

Hi Rick,
I had this plane with an O.S. 0.61FX. It is not a bad combination, although it does not have unlimited vertical. I will build another one and this time I will put a Tower 0.75. Which is $60 less than the 61. You might also consider the Super Tigre 0.91 for about the same price.
I believe you will find good and bad opinions about this engine. But, if you look close enough to many other threads, you will find there are always people having problems even with O.S., Saito, Y.S., .... to name three brands. I remember with my O.61, it took 45 mins someone with years of experience set it up correctly. I bought the engine brand new. Nowadays, I have learned the basics of tunning engines, but I am still learning.
