Wow! Are there ever a bunch of tips and reviews here on the SE. Just do a search on 'Somethin Extra' or 'SE' or even 'Sumethin Extra' to read them. It would take several pages to repeat them here.

Don't know if these are covered elsewhere but two things I did with my SE: 1. Before you sheet the root end of the wings, the hole where the J-hook goes toward the leading edge of the root rib. Place a small square of scrap ply and a 4-40 blind nut for the J-hook to screw into. Be sure to securely glue, CA or epoxy the blind nut. Otherwise all you have to hold the J-hook is ply threads.
2. Instead of using rubber band to tie the J-hooks together inside, go to the hardware store and get a stiff spring about 3/8 to7/16 diameter and made of about #18 size wire and one that is about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 in long and use this to stretch between the J-hooks. Has about the same force ans the recommended rubber band but much more secure.

Be sure to start out with minimal throws on the control surfaces. The plane is a nice flier but squirrelly at first Increase the throws as you get used to it.

The plane goes together very nicely, everything fits well and you really don't need a jig. Just make sure the ribs are square. Best kit I have ever put together in 30 years of building and flying.

I agree with rkramer about the rudder. My tailwheel was very well attached to the rudder, and eventually pulled the CA hinges loose from the tail.

Canopy- When you glue it on, put the assembly back on the model to dry. Mine was not done that way and when I put it back on the model, the hatch didn't fit. Used an x-acto to cut some of the glue loose. Slipped and cut my thumb. Visit to the ER, 5 stitches, $700. Save yourself the trouble.

Pushrods- The directions are confusing as to what goes where (no pictures) The bulkheads can only be facing one way and have the holes line up correctly. The pushrod tubes cross over in the middle of the fuselage. Also, be sure you come out the correct slot when you get to the tail (upper vs lower). I got mine reversed and had to do a lot of creative wire bending to make everything work.

Landing gear- Mine's broken out a couple of times. Might consider beefing that area up a little. The aluminum gear also got bent pretty easily after a few firm landings. Using Du-Bro dural gear now with good success.

Talked to a buddy of mine, and he recommended adding more rudder area. I believe an counter-offset method like the Chipmunk might be the way to go. In other words. add some to the top of the rudder over the fin.

A counter balance is a control surface that extends past the pivot line... I'll post some pics tonight if no one else has any for a sig SE.

Simple explanation is basically a piece of wood on top of the rudder that lines up with the horizontal stabilizer's leading edge in front, and even with the rudder's trailing edge in the back. (can also be done with the elevator, and probably the ailerons if you really want to, might be interesting to see the results!)

I'm thinking my Dad,s ol Cap 21 had counterbalanced Ail. Not a lot infront of the hinges but there was some.

My Favourite model.

Two points:-

When building the wings, you'll find the wing mounting tube is very tight in the two ribs into which it's mounted. Fit this assembly together (i.e. the two inboard ribs and the tube) before attempting the fit the other ribs. You can get the structure really square by laying the edges of the two ribs on the building board. When happy with the fit, glue it together, and position it on the plan to start assembling the rest of the wing conventionally.

The roll rate is phenomenal! On the first flights, at least, reduce the aileron rate to about 40% or less, and put loads of expo on it.

It's a great plane that has no tendency to snap in a loop, so it's very predictable.

I've flown one with a Saito 72, OS 46 FX, and OS 61 FX. The OS61 gives it unlimited everything, but my favourite is the Saito.
