Well OK I used the aileron stock to put a angle on the front of the engine intake and also cut in the front hatch for the hopper tank ... I didn't take a pic of it but with all the sanding and forming the weight scales now shows 3.8 Lbs ...thats down a tad ..still ... more sanding to go and shape the nose cone for the engine ....

Don? While whittling away with my trusted Buck Knife on the front end I had a look at those BIG air brakes on the front engine intakes and was thinking ( I know I shouldn't do that ) How about I use some Aileron stock to take the edge off the bluntness??

Anyone can jump in here and let me know what they think.
I was gone over the weekend and I see you already have done the TE stock thing (looks good!) so my opinion is moot.

Can't wait to see how everything looks when you're done sanding...WHAT? You are? No Way! hahahahah

Nope ..Not done sanding ..YET... But I have the fuels tanks in now and the push rods for the nose gear and engine ... Now ready to do the final sanding on the whole wing and fuse up to the nose section...I still need to pick a engine so I can form the front end.

Now just months away from a test flight LOL ...DANG snow

Hey, stop that! I was thinking the same thing.

We'll see how soon I get to the Cutlass. I started shipping kit boxes south this last visit into town, I'll be shipping one a week. I can't wait to hear Sylvia ask me where the heck she is going to store them all since she can't get up into the attic anymore...heheheheh

I have now decided on the GMS .47 engine for the cutlass and it should be here this weekend. I can then continue with the motor mount and shaping the nose. ... I did not want to use a more expense engine just in case this dang thing goes up ............... then down if you know what i mean.

The price was great at $77.00 the weight with muffler 16.1oz and can spin a 11x6 prop no problem.

OK ... here a couple Pics of the Tank placement both the hopper and the main... The plan calls for a big honking piece of ply for the tank hold down .... [:'(] more weight so instead I used some 1/4" dowel and flattened the one side .. used two elastic bands for hold down ... looks to be clean and functional

I can't tell in the pictures, Pete, but don't forget to run a pressure line to your main tank. The hopper tank should only have a feed line to the engine and a fill line from the main tank.

Don

BTW: Our LAN is out in the barracks (again! grrrr.) so I went over to the tower to check email and RCU. Chances are I won't be on this weekend much. Guess that means more work on planes! HA!

You can just see the RED Pressure ( exhaust ) line going to the main tank then the Blue feeder line goes to the hopper and the feed line from the hopper to the engine. So yep I have it covered Don but thanks for the Check ... speaking of covering ...YES.... I have started on the wing today .. the engine didn't show in the mail [>:] so will work on the fuse next week.

Hi guys,

Check out this link: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_12..._1/key_/tm.htm
I scratch built this F7u-3 a couple of years ago. The pusher config flies like a jet and our field wasn't large enough so the Cutlass is presently hanging in the garage.
My best advice is triple check the CG. Too far back and it will climb straight up on takeoff, Too far forward is not safe either, it will porpoise to destruction. Do a Google search for tailless aircraft/airplanes and study the info relating to CG, balance point, and moments.
This was a successful project and the Cutlass looks like nothing else in the air. Good luck.

Very Nice aircraft there ahdflyer and I liked your thread you have started. Yes you are right about the C/G on the Cutlass that it is very critical .. the original plans placed the C/G at 23" aft of the back plate for the spinner .. the manufacture later came out with a addendum to move it forward to 21" .... so ... it kinda leaves one to think that the best flight lies some where in between Hmmmmm

So far there has been only 2 that i know of that have flown some what successfully but do not know the c/g that was in place for there flights. I was hoping that someone reading this thread would have a stable c/g that could be tested.

I am taking my time in covering the aircraft with the snow now staying on the ground it will make the test flights some time in April Thanks for dropping by.

Pete,

Couldn't find this yesterday (typical). This link has the most concise information relating to flying wings I have ever found. I agree with your desire to get info from someone with the same kit. This info may allow you to calculate CG, MAC, etc. for cross referencing/validation.

I was just given a un flown/ completed F-7U by an old friend who likes to build. It has been sitting in his shop for about 5-6 years with an un run Magnum 46 XL on it. I did get the plans but no set-up info on control throws, he expects me to fly it .
The plane feels heavy and I think more than the 46 would be nice, I do have a good Magnum 52 xls or several 61's including a K and B Twister.
When I can obtain the balance from one that has actually flown successfully I will go with that.
Any ideas on control throws??????
Anyone have any Ideas on the above engine selection?
Will be glad to keep everyone posted on progress and results although the weather is changing quickly here and I may not have a chance to fly it until spring.

Gizmo! the addendum for the control throws are as follows... ( to be measured at the tip of the wing NOT the root) The Neutral point is 3/16" down and Aligns with the bottom of the wing ( this is measured at the Rear TE of the reflex tip).

1) Elevator and aileron deflection UP and Down Left and Right is 3/8" This is the recommended throws for early test flights.

2) The C/G is measured from the front edge of the spinner ring aft to 21" ( the one on the plan is at 23") so some where with in that range is the best C/G ( for some depending how you fly ).

3) Weight range is given to be 6.5 to 7 pounds.

4) power ...46 with a 11x7 prop and .53 with a 11x7.5

5) I am going to use a GMS .47 with a 11x7 APC

6) the Nose is to be raised from 1" to 1.5" from parallel to the ground

7) It also states that if you raise the nose and have the c/g at 21" you should bend the mains forward 1" to help with rotation at take off.

Cheers

I started one of these a few years back and got to the covering stage before it went on the back burner. I originally bought this kit (shortly after it was first released) because I seen another one fly at one of the fields in Tampa, it looked awesome in the air and flew great. It has a very high angle of attack while on final approach, yet it looked very stable. I plan on finishing it after following your all's progress, hopefully someone can confirm the CG before I fly it.

Blade47,

This has been a very good build. All I can say is "I want one!" I definately need a jet for those fly-ins, and well a turbine is out of my price range. What a cool plane this is going to be. Can't wait until we get the flight report and see her in the air!
