Default CG Sukhoi Questions?

If I mount a OS 160 on this plane how many servos would it take in the tail to balance the plane?
I would like to hear from people who have built this plane and find out what they weighed and how they balanced.
Any help would be appreciated.

Default RE: CG Sukhoi Questions?

Until some better information comes along, I will lend a little perspective. I am flying the Creek Sukhoi, pretty much same dimensions (72" ws) as the CGM Sukhoi. I did the Creek as a preliminary to building the CGM kit.

I was told the Creek ARF would be tailheavy, so I rebuilt the ARF tail and eliminated 6 oz of heavy wood. I put two tail servos in the radio compartment. Power is a YS 120NC with tank just forward of CG. Landing gear is composite, not aluminum. In order to get this plane to balance, I had to put a heavy sub-C nicad pack (2400 mah) as far forward as I could, which is on the engine mount beams above the engine.

I presume you are thinking 3D for this model, since the 160FX is a lot more power than you'd need for aerobatic flight. I have very good vertical, though not unlimited, with my YS120 at 12 lbs even. I did not like the finished weight of this ARF, but at 30 oz wingloading it flies not bad at all. It will touch down very gently with tail slightly down and a bit of throttle to keep it from stalling. I had a good time flying it all this past season.

If you can build the kit somewhere under 11 pounds, the 160FX would give you more power than you'd ever need. (Which is good!)
I plan to use a ST G2300 when I do mine, and expect that will be more than sufficient power.

When putting together a kit, before making final decision for placing servos & batteries, I get everything framed up, dry fit all the pieces together, then hang it from a plumb bob CG device. With this method you can shift components around very easily and observe the CG effects in short order. My strategy is to focus on getting the tail as light as possible (more so than the nose), and hope the airframe/power plant comes out somewhere between balanced and noseheavy. When it does, I can then get the balance I want by final placement of servos and battery. I am a big fan of battery hatch in the tail. I do my test balance with 1.5 oz lead in the tail, just to compensate for the fact that the covered model will come out more tailheavy than bare bones. It never comes out perfect, but it's pretty close.

For the Sukhoi, I would balance at ~30-31% MAC for aerobatic flying, and go back to nmt 33% for 3D. If you wanted to fly anything more tailweighted than that, I think you're outside the Sukhoi envelope (like get a Yak). My heavy Creek gave me one surprise snap, which was an early flight where I had the balance around 33-34% MAC.

I assembled the ARF with the 160 in it. It had 2 elevator servos in the tail and a pull-pull rudder set up. I was able to balance it just by moving the battery towards the rear.

I have the kit now (since the ARF was reduced to balsa dust). I am not familiar with it yet, so I don't know what kind of servo arrangement it has.

Default RE: CG Sukhoi Questions?

Hello I have two CG Suhkois one with a 160 FX and one with a G2300 I put the Elevators servos in the rear on both planes ,with a pullpull system mounted up farther in the fuse .They both balanced out easy with Little or no extra weight added.
Although the 2300 handles this plane with good authority and power to spare the 1.6 is a animal ,The plane will take off in maybe 10 feet and go straight up. If memory serves me right both planes weigh in at around 10 lbs . BTW I use a 16x10 APC in the 1.6 and a 16x8APC on the 2300
Both engines will swing bigger props ,but from my experience it hurts the performance on this particular set up.
Good luck with your build lets us lnow how it goes.
Question is your kit a newer one ,landing gear mounts in the fuse??????
