Default Adding flaps to a Sig 4-Star 60

I am building my second Sig 4-Star, and I thinking about adding flaps, any advice?

Don't do it. The 4* series of planes land very slow already.

Teachu2, I was thinking spoilers also. The first time I flew my 60, I swung around for a landing and chopped the throttle. The idle was set a bit high and it chugged on by until I ran out of dry lake.

There's room for flaps but the plane just doesn't need them.

enjoy,

Jim

If you have a computer radio you don't need any flaps on a FourStar 60. I put differential ailerons on mine and it landed so slow that I could almost catch it. If you do anything put around 20 percent reverse differential ailerons on it. It will act just like spoilers and you will still have the full ailerons for control. You can land at a faster speed and make nicer landings without bouncing.

Thanks for the good advice. I have a computer radio and will try what you suggest. I am also adding retractable landing gear, wing tips, quarter sheeted wings, etc to make this 4 star a little more unique.

You might consider cutting one rib bay out of the wing. Several people I know have done that .

Send us some pictures of your progress. I am waiting for another one to come in the mail. It should be here wednesday. I have some air retracks and was also thinking of using them on my new one. Let me know how yours comes out.

No problem. I am just in the process of collecting all the bits and pieces. Ordered a glass cowl from Fibreglass Specialities (CAP Style) What air system are planning to use?

Rohm Air. I am not sure if I want to use them. I don't like the idea of having to pump them up and having the tank in the middle of the plane.

Assuming you have a computer radio, think flaperons. Check out Frank Granelli's review of the 4*60 ARF in MA, (I believe Nov. issue) he had great results with flaperons.
I'm also finishing up a "kit" 4*60 and plan to give flaperons a try.

But just remember if you use flaperons it will fly so slow you can almost walk as fast as it flys. Bouncing is the norm using them

The slower you fly close to the ground, the more that surface winds, turbulance, and updrafts get your goat.

Enjoy,

Jim
