Just my two cents worth but I would stick with the screw mount. Screws don't deteriate with age, sun, fuel, etc. Rubber bands do. The screws give a much more positive position of the wing. It mounts the same each time. You are less likely to loose a wing in flight with screws, especially nylon that is properly tightened. Screws don't break and pop you in the face when you are installing them. I'm sure there are a few other reasons, but these should do for now.

IMHO, if the rubber bands are loose enough to take up some of the shock of whacking a wing, they are probably to loose to hold the wing on well. With a well designed screw setup, the nylon screws will shear and lessen the overall damage. They are the only way to go in my mind. However, if you whack a wing, something is going to break.

I'm in your boat as far as flying goes. It's been 30 years since I built my last model and even back then, I never got to fly. My first attempt at putting a RC plane in the air was using rubber bands, both to hold the wing on and also as the motor that turned the rudder. Things sure have changed since then.

I scratch built my re-entry model and it flew a week ago Sat by one of the club test pilots. He informed me that it flew well, but it was no trainer. He suggested a plane that I had no emotional ties to, SO I decided to go the ARF route for my trainer. It will be the last ARF. Poor quality and poor design. I hope I get to Solo it, but as soon as I do, it goes into moth balls and the "real" planes that I built and have plans and kits for are comming out. Hopefuly I put this thing in the air this week.

PS, Please note my opinions are based on 30 year old experiences and just 6 months of building this year. Mileage may vary.

Even when I put a trainer together for a friend, I change the mount for the wing to a bolt and dowell arangement. If you use enough #64 rubber bands to hold the wing correctly, a contact with the ground will cause significant damage, so go ahead, and use the bolt on method. The airplane looks better as well. The concept of using rubber bands to hold the wing on, came about when model airplanes became large enough to present a transportation problem, not for the factor of having the wing pop off. I used to use them on my large free-flight models in the 50's, because I had not thought of using a bolt-on method.

Capgems is right. Use 10-32 nylon screws and glue the blocks in really solidly.

Just one other thing that CAMPGEMS, didn't mention. Rubber bands are nasty, fuel magnets, that will always have fuel and grit under them that will in time, dis-color the wing. I can't imagine anyone recommending rubber bands in this day and age. I'm sure you friends intentions are well intended, but in this case, I think you need to follow the advice that has been offered by respondent's of this post.

After rubber bands on my Eagle 63 trainer, Oly II, and a 36" electric, I will NEVER AGAIN use rubber to mount the wing. What a pain. I built screws into my Goldberg Cub, and added them to the Goldberg Electra glider.

NO MORE RUBBER BANDS!

I agree with everyone else, stick with the bolts. Rubber bands are OK for some planes but they can be a real pain. Getting the wing centered & straight is a problem, damage to your covering, damage to the trailing, edge, etc. Like the others, I'd go with nylon bolts.
