I'm painting a cowling for my cub and wanted to know if the automotive Rustoleum spray paint. is fuel proof and if not, can I cover it with Lustercoat clear after several days of drying if I lightly mist a few coats before going for the gloss look?

Some Rustoleum is fuel proof, some is not. I suggest serching "Rustoleum" on RCU ... there have been many threads asking the same questions.
I've used Rustoleum spray ... plain solid colors ... and it's worked very well. It takes a while to dry, but it's worth the wait.

I have used the spray solid colors as well with no problem, even airbrushed with them. However I am aware through an unfortunate experience that the Rustoleum clear coat is NOT fuel proof.

I asked The source Rust-Oleum
I have used the Stops Rust Protective Enamels on both Monocoat and Ultracoat with good results .Make sure the covering is cleaned well with rubbing alcohol then scuffed well with 0000 steel wool. I do not recommend using the Rust-Oleum Clears. I have used both the Monocoat and the Ultracoat clears over the Stops Rust products with good results. I have run up to 15% nitro without any problems with the coating. Make sure you allow the finish to completely cure (can take up to a month depending on the conditions) before firing the engine up. http://www.rustoleum.com/product.asp...ct_id=18&SBL=1

My Feedback: (1)
Be aware that Lusterkote is a lacquer base product and Ultracote is an enamel base product. You can put enamel over lacquer but not the other way around. If you must use lusterkote I suggest VERY LIGHTLY MISTING the first couple of coats, and let them completely dry between coats

Both Lusterkote and Ultracote are enamels, doen't make them compatible however.
Another fuel proof auto paint is Plasticote ACRYLIC lacquer. Make sure the fine print on the back of the can says ACRYLIC however as some of their products are enamals. The Truck and Van line of paints are generally acrylic lacquer. They may not mention that it is acrylic lacquer on the front of the can.

LustreKote is Acrylic Lacquer and is not very compatible with other paint types.
Here is a good link for compatibility: http://www.modelflight.com/chemical.html

They must use a ton of retarder then. I always assumed it was a poly enamal because it took so long to dry. Faster than most other polyurethanes though.
