Default Kit Bashing

Hey all,
I am building a Reese Cloud Dancer from reduced plans, 41' wing down from 98". I had a post in the aerodynamics forum about the loss of wing area whn reducing the plans, and subsequently have enlarged the chord but not the span. Then I saw Werwage's p47 in Model Aviation and changed the tail feathers and ailerons to an eliptical shape. (in process)

Next up is a Four*40 and as I prowled around the forums I saw a number of 4*s with different modifications and I thought that it is such a basic kit that just about anything could be done with it, Then I thought... what the hell... how about a kit bash thread to see what range of projects folks have done for inspiration.

I could be up for a different thread with 4*40's or 4*60's only contest just for fun. Maybe start later in the fall after flyin season. Any interest?

In any case I would love to see pics and specs for any and all kit bashed aircraft out there... post 'em here.

Thanks!

Building from a kit but not staying with the original design. Like adding wings... changing shape of tail or wing or fuselage... adding features that are not included with the kit... In other words straying from the original plan to create something new and unique.

.......straying from the original plan to create something new and unique.
If that's the case then why buy the kit??? If you don't like what's in the kit then build from scratch and get what you want.

four stars are GREAT kit bashers ! you can make so many different looks without changing the flying charateristics....its a reasonable price kit to start with. I have heard they even make good 3d planes if you lose a bay in each wing and increase the control surface throws..

I don't have any pictures but I have built a nice me109 version out of a four star 40, a spitfire version (with a friend, it was even on a sig calendar), and also a 60 sized hawker typhoon. All three fly great ...I think a parasol winged plane would work well..and I am sure a mid or shoulder wing would, because the midstar flies excellent.

I also have mounted wire landing gear in the wings on mine, and I think they even have a bit better ground handling that way.

my me109 has a parachute and water ballon drop rigged up, and works great.. All though I will warn you, if you try to take up a gi joe sized parachutist hang on ! the wing loading on my fp 40 powered 4 star fourty was in the DANGER zone! And the poor parachutist got some nasty road rash dragging on the runway at takeoff, ha ha

Right now I have a partially built 4 star 60 I aquired from a friend, i rounded the wing tips, and might build it as a 30's era racing plane...who knows? I have so many other planes in various stages of construction...

That's what I'm talking about Foodstick! Very cool, I would love to see the pics. I love the look of the golden age racers.. now there's a thought... I am also smitten by the Cavalier Turbo-Mustangs, and Piper Enforcer... hmm...If i want scale then the enforcer would be built from a mustang kit but sorta-scale-ish could be fun... 4*En4rcer...

I built a Kougar, (see my avatar) I added the mock tip tanks and ran all control surface linkages internally, no major redesign there but that and a paint scheme based on the late '60's GT40s looked really cool. Sadly reversed ailerons on last years 1st flight of the spring, Just in too much of a hurry, you can view the wreckage in my models if you have the stomach for it.

Tower hobbies has a wing kit for the F4 Phantom for less that $35, that and a 4*-60 fuselage = 4*Phantom... Hmm...

And the 109 flies better every day. Hopefully I can post a video soon.

One of the all time favorite kits to bash is the Balsa USA Enforcer. Below are pictures of an original Enforcer, my DF conversion, and my turbine conversion.
