Default GP Ultimate Bipe pilot figure size - manual is wrong!

Hi all,

Was just trial-fitting my pilot figure in my Ultimate Bipe. The manual suggests the Williams Bros. #185, so I bought one and painted it. (Since the manual recommends using a screw up from underneath in addition to glue, I was trying to figure out how/if I could do this after covering.) I trial-fitted the canopy, and the pilot figure is too tall by 3/8". Great. So now I have to go get a #184 and start painting again. Oh well. I did email GP to let them know.

P.S. I decided to use narrow velcro straps to simulate belts instead of the screw.

I have put up a web page of pics taken during construction. I just started covering tonight. This is all a learning experience - my first kit.

I'm putting an OS .46FX in mine. I'm not looking for 3D aerobatics.

I built one this past summer. Used a fx 46 and it flies great. Watch out for overheating tho. Had lots of engine troubles due to overheat and leaning out. Solved by Plugging the front opening in the cowling opposite the cylinder head. Go figure, plugging an air hole resulted in better cooling.

The GP manual suggests that pilot because its scale is correct for the plane.

Williams bros cannot make a pilot that will fit height wise for every application. I have alwyays had to add wood to the base or sand off the base to make a pilot fit.

Goes to show how important that exit air is!

Default Resising Pilots

Using a Zona saw, cut off the bottom of the pilot figure to establish the correct width and height. Using a sanding block, sand the cut until even. Place the pilot figure on a piece of lite ply and trace out a pattern. Cut out the pattern and sand to fit the bottom of the pilot figure. Epoxy in place and drill for a screw.

It sounds complicated, but is in fact quite easy and doesn't take long at all.

Regards to all.

(Please excuse the blurred photo, I'm still trying to figure out the new digital camera)

I used a Barbie doll for a pilot in my CG Ultimate bipe. I cut her off just below her chest. Looks great and no painting. I tell people she's not as dumb as she looks.

Default Barbie

Here's my Barbie, piloting my club pylon racer, an uproar 40. I used Rit dye to tint the canopy pink to appease my grandaughters. There's something just a little strange about an airplane with a pink Canopy!

And use the screw! You don't want it to vibrate loose once the canopy is glued on!
