There's always the Balsa USA Northstar

http://www.balsausa.com/kits/kit.htp?id=31&shopperid=

Or the Force one:

http://www.balsausa.com/kits/kit.htp?id=32&shopperid=

Although neither is a very easy "First build"

How about a turbine jet or a 40% Imac giant?

I totally concur with MinnFlyer. The Balsa USA Northstar, Force One and Enforcer are unique and unusual planes that fly well and are not something you see everyday at the flying field. I built a Force One as my 3rd plane. It even lasted longer then one season!

You might also want to consider the Diamond Dust, Sig Wonder, and Lanier Shrike, however these planes are hand launch and pretty hot.

The Fusco Aircraft Long-EZ or Quickie are great different planes.

Default BTE Delta Vortex

Take a look at Bruce Tharpes's Delta Vortex. It is a great flying delta. It builds fast. Vertical decents are a blast.

Other similarily 'odd' aircraft here :

I would like to try these out, they look really neat, but I would worry about the flight characteristics. ?? Sumday D

I'd recommend the Clancy Aviation Turbo Bee.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCEA9&P=7

I think this would make a great first kit. It goes together very smoothly. Everything fits perfectly (it's laser cut). Not much in the way of setup instructions or things like that, but if you've been flying for awhile you know about radio installation, clevises etc.

Check it out!

How about Hobby Hangars OV-10 Bronco?

I have the arf version, but it is also sold as a kit. A very nice looking plane, that is unusual. Flight characteristics are quite good.
